I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.

Even the term "Party chat" was started by Xbox.
We haven't seen PlayStation with a clear direction in years.

PlayStation for the latter half of the PS4 run into PS5 has just been "Copy Xbox's homework".
β’ PS Plus Extra
β’ Merging cloud streaming in PS Plus
β’ PS1 & PSP BC
β’ PC game ports
β’ PlayStation Stars
β’ PS5 incremental trophies
And that's not even counting the PS4's launch.

It's also odd to frame Sony as having a plan for the future when their plan is just "pull back from our plan".
They're selling which is great but they don't have a clear direction like they did in the PS2 and PS3 eras.

A lot of gamers definitely feel there's a "traditional" way to do things that shouldn't be altered and if you do you're committing an unspoken sin.
...and consoles are at the center of that.
All while PC and mobile game sales keep going up.

PlayStation Looks Decisive Right Now While Xbox Merely Flails
Sony is consolidating efforts as the console wars enter their strangest chapter yet
This @Kotaku.com article (which was understandably left off of social media) has such a weird framing IMO.
Gaming journalists often don't realize how loudly they're expressing certain biases and this article is clearly "Exclusives matter" without saying why.

It takes 3,000 people to contribute $5 a month to pay someone to maintain critical public-good services like this. 3,000 isn't a lot. Neither is $5.

The way these metaverse platforms are being built right now is like Google's AMP where devs are limited on what they can code and the presentation of these web pages.
Supporting full apps and acting as a cleverly disguised launcher for them would be more enticing.

Android just had "Instant Apps" not long ago too so this is completely doable over there without even downloading full games every time you start an activity.
The open web is best for this sort of thing though.

It sounds stupid but game dev is hard.
I don't want to spend my time and money making content for your game, I want to make mine.
Wouldn't it be best to build something that can just seamlessly integrate my game instead of forcing me to code within your universe?

The problem I have with everyone's metaverse idea is all of these companies are over engineering it.
All you need is a way for people to load your custom character models and a way to display another game transparently over your game like an <iframe> and you're done.

Can I just repeat myself for this week's post?

Why Isnβt Trump (Even) Less Popular?
There are two reasons.
Trump's got about 39% support right now. How is that possible?
two things:
1. fascism has a constituency
2. partisanship is powerful
I talk about both at some length here. www.everythingishorrible.net/p/why-isnt-t...
