I’m gonna be That Guy for a minute.

FUCK. MARX.

Marx won’t help you here unless you have someone to show you how Marx’s analysis of the effects of machines (which is a huge fucking class of objects) on labor applies to our contemporary situation.

Karl Weick (organizational psychologist, foundational work on sensemaking) had a great refrain: β€œHow can I know what I think until I see what I say?” I often think about this in relation to how AI can interfere w/ thinking by substituting its words for ours. This experimental study offers evidence.

AI autocomplete doesn’t just change how you write. It changes how you think AI-powered writing tools are increasingly integrated into our e-mails and phones. Now a new study finds biased AI suggestions can sway users’ beliefs

β€œOverall, the study participants who saw the biased AI text shifted their positions toward those espoused by the AI.”

I am working on a book involving a werewolf who works in education…there has to be a way to shoehorn it in somewhere.

Lycanthropology: the study of werewolf culture

Is this anything

(I should be working on schoolwork or this book or literally anything at all, but my body has decided it’s time for a vacation.)

Mum or grandma realized what was going on and tried to get him to stop. I waved her off. I too get excited when I see a kitty.

As much as I am unnerved that the double decker buses can see into my window, it’s kind of worth it watching this little boy wave at Astrid.

Casual reminder that The Last Jedi was the most Star Wars Star Wars since the OT and I will not hear a word against it until you fully address the crimes against humanity of the prequels.

I was in an accident and chiropractors kept cold calling me. That should be completely illegal.

Folks don’t like being reminded that their choices can cause harm.

But that’s not what this is about. This is about going to Rome and demanding they do as New Yorkers do.

I’m not claiming I am perfect, nor is the expectation of never causing discomfort in any way appropriate and free from things like ableism and racism.

At my first job, my coworker called me Eeyore because I answered β€œhow are you” honestly. At my last I was a pain in the ass about ableism.

And when you have come to a new place, the onus is not on everyone to make allowances for you.

Americans have a habit of rocking up to other cultures’ tea parties and complaining there are no French fries. Maybe just try to find what you like in this context instead of trying to take over.

β€œIf you can’t handle me at my worst you don’t deserve me at my best” was just…incomprehensible to me.

I will happily be myself in every conversation, but the myself that’s appropriate for the context.

My parents did a lot wrong, but one thing they explained very well is that we all have different presentations in different situations, and that doesn’t mean you’re being inauthentic, it means you’re being sensitive to the nuances.

It was a shock to encounter the β€œbrutally honest” folks.

I’m a little frustrated with some of my fellow American students. They’re complaining about not fitting in, and look.

We already have a cultural reputation, rightly or wrongly, of being self-centered and intense. So maybe don’t lead into new conversations with intensity and self regard?

A lovely mossy boulder with a face. I walked past this venerable stone gentleman on Dartmoor when I was beginning to write my first novel, Villager, and it whispered all 104,000 words of the book to me. So now I have to pay it all of my royalties. Unfortunately my ex-publisher stopped paying me royalties last year. Understandable, the boulder was not happy. But now I have a new publisher and the book is being republished this Thursday. So remember if you purchase a copy you will be helping a boulder to eat, pay the rent on his riverside moss garden, and feed his boulder family.

Yes it could be argued that keeping up with world events is important but alternatively can I interest you in hugging an ancient mossy boulder that looks like a face and quietly listening while it tells you stories from centuries cloaked in mist.

I once again find myself telling y’all about our friend who threw a fuck off wedding scale party for their 32nd birthday because why not. there were save the dates, formal invites, venue with plated catering, massive cake, black tie, live band, it was incredible

Can't quite believe this needs repeating, but:

If you're using commercialised LLM extruders for any reason - whether it's rewriting an email, deploying a "thinking partner" or doing "research" for your next book...

You are handling stolen goods

You are sanctioning plagiarism

Stop

"People used to be excited about tech, now they dread what data you're going to steal next, they dread what violation of privacy or the environment will turn up next."

YEP.

The post Dr. Flowers is responding to seems to assume asylum seekers will have access to devices compatible with LLMs. Same deal. It’s not a great equalizer if it relies on historically marginalized folks having the cash or generous benefactors. Especially in this climate.
