This is a free, on-line lecture via Zoom.
Color Power, 5x7, ink, thread and wool. The words are Kandinskyβs, and the colors are two favorites. The quote brings me back to Jurgenβs class, his incredible use of color, and the amazing work created by classmates. Cheers!

I love the poem and have produced several versions for birthday cards, with different color treatments.
The colors are too soothing, though, so a high contrast version will probably take shape.
Bare Tree, 6x8, marker and colored pencil. The title of this piece is that of the poem lettered between the trees, by Anne Morrow Lindburgh.
Vote Fight, 10x14, hand embroidery. This piece started as a simple line drawing of two heads facing off. I used the drawing in a simple embroidered piece, a small painting, and now, this work to vent frustration about our eroding democracy.
The watercolor droplets suggests that breath lives in and around our lettersβ¦an integral part of their formation.
Breathe, 7x10, watercolor. I started to create an image like Kleeβs Old Town, with abstract lettering in place of the buildings. I couldnβt quite make it work so Breathe evolved to evoke a synergy between breath and writing.
Portrait, 12x12β, hand embroidery. Yaleβs free art lectures (artgallery.yale.edu/visit/progra...), inspired me to create a portrait, and after Jurgenβs class, I decided to fill the background with an alphabet.
Jurgen Vercaemstβs Colorful Lettering Compositions class in January 2025 inspired a lot of work this past year with colorful, drawn letters, including these five pieces. I live in Portland, Oregon, so I really appreciate FOCβs online classes.
Our featured member of March is Ruthie Petty:
I am a mixed media artist and enjoy integrating lettering in my work. Many pieces start as drawings or paintings, then morph into variations of cards, larger pieces, art quilts, or sculptures.
