Beyond the Journal Awards β€” Experiment Foundation Help us find and celebrate the next generation of open science pioneers.

Grateful to the Experiment Foundation and Navigation Fund for the "Beyond the Journal" award (experiment.foundation/beyond) recognizing our open science practices in our open source lab manual (rendeiro.group/lab-manual)!

"we have an obligation to create high context environments" agreed - to me that is already true with conventional workspaces. Research data and derivatives should be organized, open, FAIRified, etc - yet I don't see OpenAI focusing on that ever as it'd go against their business model

πŸŽ‰ Huge congratulations to Lisa Kleissl on winning the APART-MINT fellowship from the @oeaw.bsky.social !

A shared postdoc in our lab and the labs of @lderooij.bsky.social and Georg Stary, Lisa's ideas and research earned the well-deserved recognition πŸ™Œ

Had recently the fastest ever turnover in a manuscript we submitted. All 3 reviewer reports were for sure heavily AI-generated. All have multiple factual errors (e. g. the authors don't specify X -> it's in the manuscript), very generic and asked for 'validation' in a super broad manner πŸ™„

Thank you, Marco Demaria (UMCG), for a great #CeMMinar on heterogeneity in cellular #senescence! He shared how senescent cells can both aid tissue repair & drive aging & dysfunction, & how targeting them could support healthy aging. Thanks to our hosts @lderooij.bsky.social & @andre-rendeiro.com

Finally, someone has solved a real problem with AI! No more having to take a paper in the format for a journal that rejected you, and reformat it for a new journal. Well done!! formatmypaper.com

Robust multicellular programs dissect the complex tumor microenvironment and track disease progression in colorectal adenocarcinomas Colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly heterogeneous, with five-year survival rates dropping from $\sim$90% in localized disease to $\sim$15% with distant metastases. Disease progression is shaped not only...

🧭 Colorectal cancer doesn’t follow a single path.
Using spatial proteomics on ~500 tumors, we found distinct trajectories from early to late stage, involving the whole tumor microenvironment and its metabolic state.

Aging reshapes local tissue interactions but most organs retain a resilient overall architecture.
Our atlas provides a new framework to study tissue structure, resilience, and aging.

Among 100+ biological and clinical factors, age was the main driver of microanatomical changes.
About 27% of domains shift in abundance over adulthood, yet others remain remarkably stable.

We developed H&E-UTAG, an unsupervised method that detects recurrent microanatomical domains directly from H&E slides.
It identified 218 domains across 40 tissues and 29 organs β€” revealing how cellular organization underlies organ function.
