That flow tho.
The are under some sort of Cold Advisory/Warning or Winter Storm Warning in the Contiguous U.S. is almost as large as Pluto.
Most people won't see me or Matt or @weatherwest.bsky.social or @katharinehayhoe.com talking about the value of NCAR or NCAR has done to make us all safer from the weather.
But you know who people would see? Their local weathercaster.

If @ametsoc.org or @nwas.org ever gave out a "Graphic of the Year" award, it should go to Jay Cordeira, displaying the synoptics behind the Predecessor Rainfall Event before #Helene
It's an amazing graphic and displays our double whammy of 'rain and then more rain.'
Record heat now outnumbers record cold by more than 3 to 1 in the US. In a normal climate, theyβd be equal. After billions of years of natural hot & cold cycles, human forcing has now overtaken nature as the longterm driving force of our present & future climate.
It's cold out there. Like 40s and 50s and stuff. Brrr.
Nice swath of record/near record chill this morning from the Midwest to Mid-Atlantic region.
A map of Spain with the total eclipse path marked. It travels from Oviedo in the NW down to Palma in the SE. A colour scale marks the average August cloud cover from 20 years worth of data. There are pockets with <10% chance of clouds along the path of totality. From https://eclipsophile.com/tse2026/
A total solar eclipse. Whispy clouds cover a dark circle with a ring of bright light around it. On one side is an especially bright light, like a diamond on a ring.
Mark diaries: 1 yr from today!
12th Aug 2026: total solar eclipseπππ for Northern Spain, Greenland and West Iceland.
Where's the best spot? Well eclipsophile.com has kindly calculated the average Aug cloud cover & Spain looks v promising π§ͺπ

Congrats, Raleigh! After the warmest July on record π₯΅ (since 1887), you followed up with the coldest high temps π₯Ά on record for the first week of August!
Graph showing frequency of 4 consecutive days with a high temperature below 75F. Note the lack of periods between June and August, with the only data point being the current 2025 streak in early August.
Very fall like August start in Upstate SC due to persistent Cold Air Damming, #CAD.
Greenville, SC had 4 consecutive days (2,3,4,5 Aug) w/ a high π½ 75F. Unprecedented in #KGSP 63-yr record for this time of year.
Yet only 10 days removed from back-to-back 100F record highs in late July. πππ’ #SCwx
Japan broke it's All-time NATIONAL heat record for the 2nd time in... checks notes... less than a week!
It's not coincidence. It's climate change.
Japan is surrounded by the most anomalously hot water on the planet right now. The city of Isesaki hit 107 - it's in a valley NW of Tokyo. 1/
The average July 2025 dew point temperature for the Lower 48 was 1.2F above the 1991-2020 normal. Most areas of the map are dark green or blue - except for the very dry Southwest.
On a more serious note - temperatures will already warm up again tomorrow, with highs nearing 90 again along I-95 [left].
There's just one thing still missing from this seemingly typical summer day - the humidity [right].
How come? (short thread below)
ERROR 404: Summer humidity not found
A pretty rare and hot forecast for our area.π₯π‘οΈ A temperature of 100Β° is relatively rare in any given year in Charlotte. Multiple 100Β° days in a year are even rarer, and the rarest of them all is 5 in a row. It's only happened once in our history since 1878. Stay cool and stay hydrated. #cltwx
Did you hear about 20 people injured yesterday in a "bolt from blue" lightning strike while at a lakefront beach park near Columbia, SC? My breakdown of what may have happened and cautionary notes about summer lightning. Thanks Jordan McLeod, South Carolina Weather

π‘οΈ NC Heat Health Alert System update: the entire stateβand much of the USβis having a very hot week. Even the Appalachians hit a heat-index of 90β97 Β°F today; up there thatβs the level where ER visits jump. Heat is, by far, our deadliest weather hazard.

#Heat risk is hyper-local. Clouds, wind, and surface typesβlike grass or concreteβcan quickly shift how heat is felt over short distances.
Klimo Insights uses satellites, land data, and weather models, among other inputs, to generate #WBGT estimates that reflect real-world conditions where you are.
Today's heat keeps climbingβtomorrow will be hotter.
Unlike the heat indexβwhich reflects shaded conditionsβ#WBGT accounts for sun, wind, and humidity to show actual heat stress risk. Check your local forecast with our app: wbgt.klimoinsights.com

Population estimate for exposure to Extreme NWS HeatRisk at some point over the next 7 days. At least 94 million potentially exposed. Impacts likely in most health systems, heat-sensitive industries, and infrastructure. Stay hydrated, avoid direct sun, check on the elderly and pets! #HeatWave2025
