Huh. Excellent question. I think β¦ Tuberville is stupider in absolute terms, but Mullin is more aggressively stupid. Tuberville will say and do dumb things when the opportunity arises, but Mullin goes out of his way to make sure we all know heβs a moron.
Maybe? π€·ββοΈ
Theyβre both profoundly stupid.
Itβs almost as though no sane, intelligent, decent human beings want to work for Trump β¦ π€

Itβs entirely possible that Iβm an idiot for not realising this earlier, but I just tried the microphone function on the iPad and itβs making my marginal notes on manuscripts Iβm editing *so* much faster!
Finally, he gets something right!
But I think it will take a major court loss by a Big Five publisher to incentivise the industry to take it seriously.
This is true. There is some wilful ignorance at work. And also the fact that extensive checking only goes on for high-profile books (legal reads on politiciansβ autobiographies for example), when it really should happen for fad diets and cod psychology books.
Excellent point re: the woo-woo stuff. But still, we both know how little money there is in publishing β can publishers really afford to fact check every book? Are they entitled to accept that authors are being honest or are they being naive? I think itβs a really tough nut to crack.
TFW youβre trying desperately to get some momentum on an editorial read but you have to keep stopping every page to make marginal corrections to factual errors. Still, at least itβs only 145,000 words long β¦ *sigh*
I donβt think itβs quite that clear cut. Certainly publishers could do more in the way of due diligence on manuscripts and authors, but they shouldnβt be responsible for an author lying to them. But, yeah, 100% βthatβs an author problemβ is not the way to behave.
Absolutely. The question should not be: are they really popular guests on X television show? It should be: are they dangerous charlatans?

Excellent! Puts me in mind of one of my favourite Bloom County strips.

Just to fly the π¦πΊ for a moment. Every Version of You is wonderful; @gracechanwrites.bsky.social is one of the most exciting new voices in Australian SF & Iβm delighted to see her shortlisted. Also heartily recommend @ghostspecies.bsky.socialβs Landfall, a terrific climate-change SF detective novel.
Oh yeah. Horrible person. Just not solely to blame for the anti-vax pox weβre currently suffering.
I mean, heβs still a fraudster whoβs caused massive damage, but heβs certainly not the sole inciting individual. As you say, Charlie, the pit was already there; he just pulled up the cover.
IIRC, itβs also the case that Wakefieldβs initial assertion was that it was the three vaccines *at once* that was the issue. He vilified the MMR but was happy to recommend single vaccines as long as they were spaced apart. It was only after he was struck off that he joined the full antivax brigade.
So, a slow day for him β¦
