Students, faculty mystified as NSF turns back applications for prestigious fellowship program
Applicants to a prestigious National Science Foundation fellowship program say many submissions have been mysteriously โreturned without review.โ
Students and faculty have been baffled (and frustrated) as NSF turns back applications for its prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Those affected seem to mainly be in the life sciences. My latest for @statnews.com

The cover of Heartbeat Magazine which features a boombox sitting in a field of grass and flowers with a hand reaching from out of frame to press a button. The title Heartbeat is written in all caps at the top, and at the bottom are hand drawn music notes. Framing the cover is a purple background with digital renderings of plants and nature.

This is the best summary I can personally come up with from ACIPโs meeting on COVID19 vaccines:
1. I think the situation is the same as it was *before* the meeting.
2. They voted that prescriptions are not required, but if you live somewhere that currently requires them, they still may be.

California, Oregon, and Washington to launch new West Coast Health Alliance to uphold scientific integrity in public health as Trump destroys CDCโs credibility
In response to the dismantling of the CDC, California, Oregon, and Washington have launched the West Coast Health Alliance, which will make their own science-based vaccine guidelines, and make sure vaccines are accessible to everyone.

You can very easily make a case for yourself as being someone who qualifies for Covid vax on this list.
Physical inactivity, former/current smoker, depression, ETC - these are extremely broad and wide ranging categories.
*You can also just lie* and say youโre depressed. Do what you need to do!!!

Trump order aims to politicize decisions on federal science grants
Researchers worried by plan giving political appointees more control over where funding goes
Research advocates are expressing alarm over a White House directive on federal grantmaking released yesterday that they say threatens to enhance President Donald Trumpโs control over science agency decisions on what to fund. scim.ag/45q6P4J

RFK Jr.โs New Advisers Rescind Recommendations for Some Flu Vaccines
Panelists pulled back some endorsements for certain vaccines containing a preservative that critics have falsely linked to autism.
โAs a physician and scientist who has devoted my entire career to vaccines and preventing and treating infections, this meeting has been devastating to watch.โ ACIP votes to stop recommending some vaccines, even though they're safe and effective. nyti.ms/3ZT1pxg

How Kennedyโs Purge of Advisers Could Disrupt U.S. Vaccinations
www.nytimes.com/2025/06/13/h...
Free article from @nytimes.com by the amazing @apoorvanyt.bsky.social. Not only were the ACIP experts fired, but Kennedy "reassigned" the scientists who oversaw and vetted the ACIP members.
The intent is clear - as is the danger.

A header in gold and silver text that reads "NSF 75 years of discovery & innovation" Below that is an open envelope with a piece of paper sticking out. On the paper in a handwritten font reads, "Thank you, NSF!" and below the text are the logos of the following NSF centers: C-CAS, CSN, CSOE, MONET, CSP, CMCC, and C-GEM.
๐ To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NSF, the Centers for Chemical Innovation collected thank-you notes from our members that highlight the positive impact of NSF support.

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS
We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years.

White House trumpets Covid lab leak theory on web page that was devoted to health information
Covid.com used to give information about managing the disease. The White House is using it to trumpet the much-disputed Covid lab leak theory.
A government website long used to provide the latest guidelines on managing Covid-19, has now been replaced with a page proclaiming the virus emerged from a lab in Wuhan, China and that Anthony Fauci, the Biden Administration and others worked to cover it up.

Bird Flu Is a National Embarrassment
America should have more aggressively intervened almost a year ago.
The experiment of unchecked bird flu circulation in livestock in US is tough to watch. The thing about virus threats is that they carry on whether you acknowledge them or not. Action is about saving us, cos the virus gdaf and is gonna do its thing regardless.
