Apparently I accidentally uploaded the less compatible of the 2 versions of the game. I replaced it with the correct one, but unfortunately Nestopia's incorrect emulation results in random right presses.

Nintendo doesn't want you to know about the NES's secret 2nd background layer. (Uses a similar technique to Asterix on the Game Boy.)
