The backstory is somewhat bizarre. Wonder Woman is a princess who lives on Paradise Island with other Amazons. She must return a military intelligence officer who crashes on the island back to the U.S. She decides to stay in the U.S. (and “Man’s World”) to promote peace, love and equality. /5

Marston was influenced by the suffrage movement while attending Harvard and became a vocal supporter of women’s rights. Wonder Woman served “psychological propaganda” for his belief that women are emotionally superior to men. She was also a counterpoint to the hyper-masculinity of most comics. /4
