Portrait of Lillian Wald by William Valentine Schevill in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Wald never married, instead focusing her life on βThe Familyβ β the community of women reformers at Henry Street. Her legacy lives on through Visiting Nurse Service Health, which grew from her settlement work and remains one of the largest nonprofit home healthcare organizations in the U.S. /end
Lillian Wald (left) and Jane Addams in 1916. The two women were close friends, peers and collaborators who led the American Progressive Era settlement movement. As pioneering women in social reform, they shared a deep, lifelong bond, often collaborating on peace initiatives and social justice causes, including founding the NAACP and opposing WWI. Wald was a founding member of the NAACP and insisted that all classes at Henry Street be racially integrated. In 1912, she was elected as the first president of the National Organization for Public Health Nursing. In 1918, she led the Nursesβ Emergency Council during the Spanish flu pandemic. /6

In 1902, Wald convinced the NYC Board of Education to hire the first public school nurse after demonstrating how it could reduce student absences. She also helped drive the creation of the U.S. Childrenβs Bureau in 1912 to improve infant health and protect children from labor exploitation. /5

Wald coined the term βpublic health nurseβ in 1893 to describe nurses working outside hospitals to meet people where they lived in poor, immigrant communities. She believed nurses should treat the social, economic and environmental factors of illness, not just the physical ailments of the sick. /4

After witnessing a dying mother in a squalid tenement, Wald moved to the Lower East Side to provide direct community care. In 1893, she established the Henry Street Settlement to provide services such as nursing care, English lessons, vocational training and the cityβs first municipal playground. /3

Wald was born into a wealthy German-Jewish family and raised in Rochester, N.Y. She enrolled in New York Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1889, inspired to pursue the profession by a nurse who cared for her sister. After she graduated in 1891, she worked at the New York Juvenile Asylum. /2

Screenshot of UNITED24 Media The World Is Just Discovering Drone Warfare. Ukraine Has Lived It for Four Years Cheap drones are reshaping modern warfareβand exposing a dangerous imbalance: they cost tens of thousands of dollars to build but millions to stop. Despite sweeping sanctions, Russia and Iran continue to build attack drones using Western technology
π¨ After launching a military operation against Iran, US has encountered mass attacks by Iranian drones. These drones are ruthlessly precise while also cheap to produce. In private, the WH acknowledges that Shaheds have proven to be a bigger threat than expected.

The inept Trump administration is on a spending spree with our tax dollars.
Mr Trump is blowing thru $3B a day for an unpopular WAR and Hegseth spent $93B in 2025 on furniture, steaks, and fruit alone.
