I am a sucker for some bold and cartoony sfx lettering. From Savarese by Robin Wood and Domingo Mandrafina.

The Dennis the Menace comic strip by Hank Ketcham debuted on March 12, 1951. It would be adapted into a popular sitcom only eight years later, and eventually cartoons & films. He was also Dairy Queen’s official mascot from 1971 to 2001.

Rube Goldberg used to say of his profession, "We're vaudevilleans!" The humour tradition hung on to this approach much longer than adventure strips. You still see vestiges of it in the Beano.

I find looking at old newspaper strips (1890s-1910s) really interesting in this regard - the visual language is almost entirely theatrical. The panel is essentially a proscenium arch, the characters are normally drawn full-figure.

I love how every character (major and background) shows personality in their movement and body language β€” the old man dozing off on the bench, the janitor, the young couple slow-walking, the parents dealing w/ their impatient kid eager to see the next thing, everyone on the sidewalk below.

In today's "libraries are amazing" news: You want a creepy photo from the 1928 World Book Encyclopedia? Internet Archive! You want a 1921 St. Paul city ordinance? Hathi Trust! Oh, they didn't scan 1922 -- walk to the law library!

Grammarly Is Facing a Class Action Lawsuit Over Its AI β€˜Expert Review’ Feature The feature, which Grammarly shut down Wednesday, presented editing suggestions as if they came from established authors and academicsβ€”without their consent.

I'm suing Grammarly over its paid AI feature that presented editing suggestions as if they came from me - and many other writers and journalists - without consent.

State law requires consent before someone's name can be used for commercial purposes.

An EXCELLENT reason never to use AI tools in your writing. It doesn't just change HOW you express yourself, it can prompt you to change what you mean in the first place.
What I'm suggesting is: you should not be using Grammarly.

Here’s a flip thru of the upcoming COPRA Master Collection 2 β€” I’m telling you, it came out perfectly. I’m not just saying that because I wrote & drew the damn thing, it’s an impressive artifact by any measure.

Spread the word, we wanna make sure stores are stocked up!

there was also a Stanford study that found that a surge in AI slop by lazy people actually created significantly more work for others who had to decipher and correct it

this "I'm being efficient" (but not really) vibes well with the American obsession with artifice and appearing productive
