How many years into this until our leaders finally realize that appeasement and weakness donβt really work?
At least Carney got a little better on this one after some backlash.

I never really followed him closely. Not out of any major dislike, just not as interested in videos about Elon Musk or Dubai or whatever. So I havenβt seen what heβs been up to
An otherwise good YouTube channel about drones that I sometimes watch made a video campaigning to stop Canadaβs high-speed rail project.
One particularly frustrating point is when he said it would be "horrific" to have fast trains every 30 minutes near peopleβs cottages.
Iβm definitely not immune to the price of oil. I might want to fly this summer, plus the general effects on the economy.
But itβs nice to be relatively less exposed due to not owning a car and living in a place with green electricity/heating.
One of my favorite factoids about the Liberal Party of Canada is that they were in power for more of the 20th Century than the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
βGiven the current turmoil in the international order, the EU must elevate its strategic partnership with Canada to a new level, MEPs say, pointing to shared interests and values.β
There are very few days each winter here where cycling feels dangerous.
(Inadequately plowed snow is challenging, often not worth it to bike through, more than dangerous.)
The exception is a freezing rain storm like today.
Or the 1β2 other days of substantial ice buildup we had in December.
I actually forgot my OPUS card in my other coat today, so Iβm looking forward to that
I think the most annoying thing about paying for transit in Montreal right now is the mess of not being able to load multiple zoned fares on the same card.
So I need to get temporary tickets for zone AB to go to Laval or Longueuil (or at least to leave from there).
OPUS card load fares with phone
I really like being able to load fares onto my transit card using my phone, instead of the old way of having to load it at a metro station.
(Even if itβs not quite as convenient as being able to tap my bank or credit card on transit like in a lot of other cities.)
I would never think to call them anything different! I just googled the term and most of the examples are from Canada, with a few from New York (although this one uses both terms).
Many people believe they can park in bus lanes if they turn on their four way flashers. βIβll just be a minute.β
Saint-Denis Street in Ahuntsic (where it's only 1.5 km long due to the river and train tracks cutting it off from the more urban and commercial stretch of the street closer to downtown)
Enormous residential street. Five cars wide. How do you calm traffic?
Speed bumps, obviously.
Nothing makes you appreciate universal healthcare (and other social programs) like having a child.
I have never spent so much time in a hospital.
I canβt imagine compounding the stress of a medical emergency with worry about how much itβs going to cost.
Hello from South of the border where we were billed $32k and responsible for $6k, combined with insane health insurance premiums and all the other costs associated with adding a +1 to your household.
I hate it here.
Healthcare in Canada is not perfect. Many people donβt have a family doctor. Non-urgent issues can face long waits.
But weβve had overall very good care from pregnancy to delivery to follow-ups, check-ups, and emergencies more recently. Iβm thankful.

I forget which one of you linked this interview with Lloyd Axelworthy, but itβs some of the most substantive criticism Iβve read of the Carney government to date #cdnpoli
This is happening because the average American family spent $50 more on eggs over the course of a year btw
Fortunately Quebec is (alongside Atlantic Canada) the most anti-Trump part of the country in all the polls I've seen.
Itβs cool that this generation gets to find out the answer to βwhat would you have done when we started interning the Japanese?β and βwhat would you have done when we invaded Vietnam?β and βwhat would you have done in Watergate?β all at the same time.
I think she made mistakes like not sufficiently distinguishing herself from Biden or doing as much media as Trump. She wasnβt as charismatic or inspiring as Obama.
Nothing that comes close to the generational embarrassment and disgrace to your country that is Donald Trump though.
US gas prices are definitely an outlier in the developed world
I must point out that gas prices in germany currently are 8.70 USD per gallon lol. I know the price is largely composed of taxes but it is truly insane how cheap gasoline is in the US, and how normalized it is to drive 80 miles to work and back every day
Itβs profoundly weird to have βThe Troopsβ be this ephemeral, elusive concept that demands deference in all seasons no matter what.
It feels Prussian.
When transit is frequent enough, βIβm late because I missed my bus/trainβ does not really exist.
France: 1.90β¬/L = CAD$3.00/L = USD$8.36/gallon
Thatβs why American voters chose Trump: the candidate of respecting women and standing up for Palestinians
