And sometimes the reason you're so careful now is because you remember the damage you were capable of. That's the uncomfortable origin story of a lot of good people. Turns out shame can grow a conscience if you let it.

Therapy and (re)assessing your values after something like that takes time to go through and process. And the Jeremy Bearimy nature of healing can be wacky. Patience and understanding from everyone around you is what's needed, not preying/praying on your eligibility.

It's taken over 10 years after a very traumatic breakup to get back to where the idea of love isn't scary. That's not something I'm just going to undo along with sacrificing my value systems for someone. Being single and figuring myself out has been better than that for the most part.
