The best sunscreen is the one you can use a lot of, regularly - and don't forget to use sunscreen in conjunction with protective clothing, hats, shade and sunglasses when the UV index is set to hit 3 or over 😎

You can see my discussion with Dr Myro in the comments on his IG post.

It's also important to consider the downsides of the alternatives - mineral sunscreens have a lot of drawbacks, very few people end up being able to use them regularly (if you genuinely prefer mineral sunscreens that's fine, just watch out for separation and adequate application!)

A lot of chemical #sunscreen fear is from animal/in vitro studies taken out of context, without comparing exposure in those studies to the actual amounts we're exposed to from sunscreens.

Safety limits have massive buffers (100-fold margin of safety, from eg. no observed adverse effect level).

I need to do a proper video on it, but here's the new Australian sun exposure guidelines to give you an idea of what you'd expect for evidence-based guidelines - the US recommendation is based almost purely on vibes, I don't think there's even an official document www.assc.org.au/wp-content/u...

It's ironic that this article perpetuates fear about chemical sunscreens being unsafe. Plus the misconception that dermatologists are experts on product safety (that's toxicologists and safety assessors).

Also the US blanket recommendation on sunscreen use that's not actually based on evidence...

A graphic showing a mnemonic called MUDCAPS which stands for
Misleading credentials (eg PhD in art history just referring to themselves as β€˜Dr’ and talking about health)
Undisclosed everything (if they hide financial conflicts, they are demonstrating they are willing to bend the truth)
Defensive (in response to professional criticism)
Credit (do they say where they have gained their knowledge, from whom eg educational resources)
Authority (appeal to authority, can’t explain their position without relying on their status)
Peers (what company do they keep, are they respected in their fields)
Spotty track record (you can figure this one out)

Next is MUDCAPS from @labmuffin.com and @theecowell.bsky.social, more friends that are bigger deals on instagram so do follow them there if you use it. Here’s a frame from Michelle’s most recent vid which I really liked, even though I have no special interest in cosmetics, I still learnt loads

A graphic showing the CRABS mnemonic which stands for
Conflict of Interest – eg are they selling what they’re promoting
References – Do they include references so others can check their claims
Author – What is their background, is it relevant? Do they have relevant expertise or publications?
Buzz words – Do they use lots of jargon to sound impressive (ie an episode of the Huberman Lab)
Scope of Practice – Are they misrepresenting their experience online vs real life, ie a junior doctor claiming they are managing complex patients indepdently

Maybe it would be easier to get scientists who aren't as familiar with research fraud on side if it was framed more as "scientific *publishing* will be destroyed".

I got similar criticism when I tried to highlight the issues with peer review on Threads a while back πŸ˜…

Dear science communicators and scientists,

Can we please be mindful of how we frame our videos?

The vast majority of companies that employ hundreds/thousands of scientists are NOT lying about things you can easily test with household items.

Views shouldn’t be the only metric we care about.
