A clean environment is a material need. So are parks, trees, trails. All of it is essential to a safe, healthy and vibrant city.
The idea that we can’t afford investments that make life better is a major part of how we get trapped in a cycle of under-investing, in my opinion.

Affordability is a poisoned chalice for Dems. It had a moment (kind of) but you can't deliver it and it doesn't mean anything.
The platform that actually makes life affordable is extending human rights to things like healthcare, and that's a far more compelling vision than coupons for basic needs.
