It also identifies key gene expression changes in taxonomically similar biofilms as they transition from the subseafloor to the seafloor.
This study presents a new framework for understanding biofilm development at deep-sea vents, highlighting a shift from niche-specific pioneer communities in early-stage biofilms to more diverse, mature communities.
