Today I really needed to read this again. I'm sure you can imagine why! :D
Very happy to see our new article βReference groups and electoral behaviorβ (coauthored with Rune Stubager, Christoffer Hentzer Dausgaard & Michael Lewis-Beck) published!
Using ANES, DNES and AUTNES data, we show that liking or disliking social groups shapes vote choice.
Currently in FirstView: in βPotential and Pitfalls of Audio as Data for Political Research: Alignment, Features, and Classification Models,β @r-mestre.bsky.social and Matt Ryan provide solutions to challenges encountered when analyzing audio data in political science.
Our @sarahwagner.bsky.social @kirareneekurz.bsky.social Research Note is now published in @pvs-journal.bsky.social.
Besides being happy about this article online, I feel very gifted for having worked - again - with these amazing co-authors! :-)
Code examples for the Python package elfen: # initializing extractor extractor = elfen.Extractor( data = df, language = "en", text_column = "text") # extracting a single feature: ttr extractor.extract("ttr") # extracting a feature area/group: readability extractor.extract_feature_group("readability") # extracting all available features extractor.extract_features()
Extracting structural/linguistic properties for large text datasets can be annoying. Existing tools either are not maintained, do not scale, or do not cover extensive sets of linguistic features.
For this reason, I implemented π§elfen, a Python package for efficient linguistic feature extraction

Words like "patriotism" and "racism" are often associated with the right, while "solidarity" and "socialism" are associated with the left.
But who uses these associations, and how do political positions matter?

We are happy to release the Paths to Power Dashboard. It is the perfect tool for politics nerds!
You can find it here: ptp.isv.sv.uio.no/ptp/
It allows you to explore governments from 1966-2021 using the PtP and WhoGov datasets. See examples below.
The app has been programmed by Stuart Bramwell.
I realised I follow several journals and now I learn about new publications and interesting papers often here first - so I made a Starter Pack with journal accounts in case you wanted to as well.
Let me know if I missed an important journal and I'll add it.

Weβre hiring for DemocraGPT, a @bidt.bsky.social-funded project developing an AI-based training for difficult conversations in times of growing polarization
We are back to a world of "spheres of influence" with authoritarian regimes pushing their hegemonic and imperial agendas through military and economic power. Left with a European Union too weak to play power politics and too morally bankrupt to still speak for a rules-based international order.
