I love this so much.
A6 1/2: I think of Toni Morrisonβs quote that the purpose of racism is distraction. I think βVictorious Futuresβ in this sociopolitical context means not merely reacting but continuing long-term proactive building of power and resources for the flourishing of minoritized communities. #literacies
Q6: I see a vision in which our research enables all kids to get to experience victories/"win" as they practice #literacies, and a vision where we can see more clearly what victory looks like from their perspectives.
A6: Thinking back to our opening question, I think a "Victorious Future" must necessarily be a co-constructed one, a future that, much like the good ole Fortnite gaming lobby, is made by a multitudinous mix of folks, all doing our own dances yet working toward the same #victory. #literacies
So exciting! @nicolermisra.bsky.social I guess this answers your question :) #literacies
Q5: I am really interested in the power-laden ways AI (e.g., AI 'agents') is shaping the world of gaming, and as a result, youth's gaming #literacies.
Q4: Working with @amystorn.bsky.social and Kathy Walsh to design the "Open World Writing" framework has shaped how I approach writing in all aspects of my life, not just academic writing. Heuristics/thinking tools matter. www.openworldwriting.com #literacies.
So glad you could join, @alexcorbitt.bsky.social!
Anne Haas Dyson, @haenyyoon.bsky.social and @brownellcassie.bsky.social are all scholars I also turn to explore that idea. Children make sense of, interpret, and rewrite their surroundings as they play. It could look like close ethnographic study of children's playful #literacies for example!
Q3: In my experiences researching online communities, language, access, and power are always in some way mediating the literate activities taking place (e.g., digital writers drafting in different languages to reach different audiences). As #literacies researchers, it's our job to follow that.
A2. Iβm interested in how asymmetric games - games in which players have different roles, objectives, and mechanics (i.e., Netrunner, MtG, Root) - might illuminate ways that people can compose together in community through processes that are both unique AND congruent. #literacies
A2: I think play and games are such a powerful way to understand children's social worlds and perspectives, and always find myself turning to @toysrtexts.bsky.social, Carmen Medina, and Mia Perry's Playful Methods as I consider play as itself an urgently needed form of #literacies research.
The relational aspect you raise makes me think about the role of power in victorious moments as well. For some reason I often associate victory with an "underdog" narrative, but watching students play games IRL, I've observed them as spaces where power is negotiated, and in complex ways #literacies
A1: Victory has so much to do with the speculative for me, imagining something, then building it into reality. #literacies
This made me lol π
Thank you for staying up so late for this #literacies chat, Dr. Berry! Excited to be in conversation with you!
Hi! My name is Clara Abbott (she/her) and I am a 3rd year doctoral candidate in Literacy Studies at Penn GSE. I have never identified as a gamer per se, but have fond memories designing Wii characters (Mii, right?) and playing hours of Mariocart as a kid, so excited for this #literacies chat!
More reason communities must end Flock contracts:
"Flock devices have been installed by more than 100 public school systems nationally...and audit logs from six Texas school districts show campus camera feeds are captured in a national database that police agencies across the country can access.β
We had so much fun creating a pop-up museum with everyday artifacts at the Penn Ethnography Forum. Shoutout to the amazing youth publishers at NOVA LitMag for their leadership. Such moving stories and reflections on how the objects in our lives bring us together and carry stories of their own.
Join us for our February #literacies chat on the intersections between gaming and literacy with @elpatronhimself.bsky.social!
Thank you all for joining tonight! Please keep in touch and explore Dr. Hedrick-Shaw's upcoming work! #literacies
If hearings/defenses are closed, itβs also a culture in my department to be intentional about choosing a notetaker who is a year or two behind us so they can see and learn from the process #literacies
I am screenshotting this! Very helpful.
Love the idea of storytelling as a practice that can ground many different audiences in why a topic matters! #literacies
I heard a piece of advice recently to not be afraid to tell friends about the jobs, fellowships, scholarships we apply for, even as we worry about getting our hopes up or βjinxingβ itβ¦transparency helps us get the emotional support we need! I definitely struggle with this! #literacies
It feels like the clichΓ© holds true that being on the job market is like a job in itself! #literacies
Colleagues of mine have given practice job talks and invited close mentors, friends and colleagues to gather feedback and re-create the more public feel - I have loved attending those and seeing the βdraftsβ behind the finished product! #literacies
So excited to see the whole @writinglit.bsky.social community in LA this year π I would also be curious (in light of this conversation) if #literacies faculty had ideas/advice about navigating conferences while on the job market as well.
Itβs so helpful to hear from folks who are in the midst of this process as well! It sounds like many institutions follow similar timelines but itβs not at all an exact schedule #literacies
