“So, the new boss, what’s his deal?” Lucius asked his co-workers, Jim and Oluwande, hoping to get them as invested in the little mystery as he was. Jim looked at him quizzically. “What do you mean?” “He wants to know if he’s gay,” Olu supplied. “I’m just curious,” Lucius explained. “He’s divorced with two kids but he never flirts with anyone who comes in the store.” Olu shrugged. “Maybe he’s being professional.” “Maybe he’s dating someone,” Jim suggested. “Maybe we should take him out for drinks.” That was it, they’d get him out of the workplace and see if he let loose. “Yeah, guess so,” Olu said. “We could ask him.” “I bet he goes hard,” Jim wagered. “Ten bucks says he doesn’t,” Olu countered. Well, they were monetarily invested. He’d take it. The next morning Lucius was late, as usual, coming in from Brooklyn on the F Train to sell shoes to the rich on Madison Avenue. Stede met him at the time clock, smiled and said, “Honey, make this your last time.” “Stede called me honey,” Lucius smugly told the others. “He’s definitely gay.” It was the nineties and straight men did not call other men ‘honey’. Jim agreed but Olu argued that maybe they did in New Zealand or Aotearoa, as they were supposed to call it now. Lucius pointed out Stede’s carnation cufflinks and his coordinated pocket squares, which Olu also found inconclusive. One day Lucius even swore he saw Stede checking out a long-haired leather daddy who was walking by, but the other two were skeptical.
