The only civil servant I talked to was the one who issued a Health Card; that’s it. After that we just go to the doctor.

Anecdotally it tracks with my own lived experience.
My parents had jobs that needed highschool and my mom worked part time. My wife’s mom didn’t work.
My wife and I have a similar lifestyle but we need two professional incomes.
It makes a lot more sense if you cast the Americans as the villains of the last quarter century.
I think this might have something to do with GenX coming to grips with how we’re all old now.
We still think of “a generation ago” as the 1950s, not the 1990s.
Two or three generations ago you could support a household on a single income.
