Why is "had had" a thing?
In English, it's accurate to write, "He had had a bagel before."
But please don't. Please revise it somehow. "He had eaten a bagel before."
She had had enough of this nonsense.

Craft is the deeper work. Sol Stein's "On Writing" talks about top-of-the-head writing, and craft is the opposite of that. It's the writing that comes from deep in your brain, your gut, your heart. It's thoughtful and precise.
