Wanted to post something for the #teachers in #Alberta who are having their rights violated by their own government and being forced back to work. Smaller class sizes allow teachers to focus on a students needs and insure a higher quality education. This is an excerpt from a piece I wrote called “Withstanding” It is not problem solving to demand that those with little continue to do more with less until less finally equals the nothing more they can do the cost of living goes up when the fine to withstand starts adding rights to the bill

when the penalty to resist is more per day than the years long work that pays their rent or their mortgage or their bills or their or or or and the so much more of it that touches down like lightning each time life happens which is as often and unrelenting as it is always pick on someone your own wage instead of voting up your own worth trying to make gravity another law you can afford to break

thinking you can live above the people instead of beside them your job is to serve the people not amputate their legs from under them to stand behind the people and be trusted not to aim at their backs down the barrel of an economy watching them drop in the muck that hasn’t yet touched your own boots when the assignment is to face the music you won’t even show up for attendance

but somehow expect gold stars and a passing grade for the test you are failing the homework you have now will come from the blaring thunder of a textbook crashing against the desk it will account for 100% of your grade because the lesson is heavy and failure is the strictest teacher.

Everyone wants to be a village, but no one wants to be a villager. That means people want a strong community for support, but they are not willing to put in the effort and sacrifice required to be a part of it.

Being snowed is the price we pay for connection and community. It can mean sharing space when it's inconvenient, showing up when you'd rather stay home, or hosting when you're tired.

Somewhere along the way, our fear of discomfort turned into hyper-independence - strict boundaries, perfect routines, and no interruptions. But when our boundaries become too rigid, they stop protecting us and start isolating us. They become walls.

And we wonder why we feel so lonely. We're paying for convenience with disconnection. We traded the messiness of community for the ease of solitude and lost something vital along the way.
