the DQ stuff is (at least in the ones I've played) almost entirely added in the localization and it adds soooo much more flair to the games. Which also sucks because localization is racing to the MTL/AI translation bottom even faster than game writing is. π

I could *maybe* see a case for like... asking gpt to adjust pre-written sentences to match the NPC type, like have a collection of things people could say and have it be like "okay adjust this line for a little girl saying it vs a burly fisherman etc." but even then... no! i don't want it!!
right!!! like at best maybe it might be useful for NPCs to draw from a pool of information about the area or quests to provide hints but the only good way to go about it is to pre-write all the possibilities anyway so the AI doesn't make shit up and frustrate the player!!!

Why would I as a player even want to talk to NPCs if they aren't saying things written and carefully curated by a team of writers and editors? If a gpt is just making shit up about the world or poorly summarizing quests... why even talk to them? At that point just make them uninteractable??
Why do people, especially in RPGs, talk to NPCs? To flesh out the world! That's where you hide the little bits of worldbuilding that make the world feel real! That's where I learn how the world affects its inhabitants. Where I organically learn about the setting. Where I get attached to the details.
I'm still thinking about the Google AI for writing NPCs and the blatant disregard for the art of writing AND gaming as a whole is so frustrating.
