Say a thought about comics

Comics are not inherently better or worse than other forms of storytelling (movies, books, video games, etc.), it has its own unique strengths that no other medium has. Comic storytelling is at its best when it's NOT trying to imitate other forms of media

I visited Chicago last year for a friend's wedding and it really is an incredible city, I'm shocked it's not talked enough about

Oh definitely, more recreationally (with friends) but I wouldn't classify him as a pothead

Carl thinks it's gross and once he hit grad school, dislikes it even more

Dude smoked when he was 16-17 but dropped the habit pretty quick once he left home

Gosh I love making comics

The only gdc I recommend going to:

- free attendance
- free sunflower seeds for everyone
- you can meet rodents
- squeak

It does make me nervous about how they will perceive Carl’s decision to be with him at the end though lol

Dude is definitely not a perfect golden retriever human being and he becomes borderline despicable at one point, but I vaguely remember the OG readers more hopeful that he becomes better while Tapas readers are way harsher on him

It’s so interesting to see Tapas readers’ reactions to these Cans of Beans pages compared to when I originally first posted them

Tapas gets the benefit of little wait between updates and I wonder if it affects their perception of these characters, ESPECIALLY Dude

I don’t have a Subscribestar but if I did, Billy wouldn’t be allowed on it and that makes me sad

Alright, I finished 3!!! Cans of Beans side story scripts, which I intend to include as an exclusive to the printed/self-published edition of Cans of Beans

Guess I got my side project set for the next 3-6 months now lol

I'm very firmly in the camp of "well, if comics pay practically nothing, I might as well make whatever the heck I want" and not try to make something super marketable anymore

It's been freeing at least!

The under-valuation of comics sucks so freaking much

LRT: Game dev ain't great pay (especially writing and narrative design) but it certainly pays better than comics

My first game dev gig at Telltale, which had notoriously shit pay, was infinitely better than every gig I've attempted in comics

This goes for American comics, too. Take what you think they make, halve it, then halve it again. And if they aren't working for the Big Two, halve it again. And to be brutally honest, if they're writing and drawing graphic novels, halve it yet again.
