Improvements for active travel proposed for Fenham Hall Drive The council is proposing changes to Fenham Hall Drive between Grandstand Road and Two Ball Lonnen that could see the street becoming much safer for cycling. Proposals include 1.5km of protected cyc…

There's a few days left to send in your support for proposals to make Fenham Hall Drive a safer street for people walking and cycling. The consultation ends at 11:59pm on Sunday.

You can read our response on the link below.

…or drivers denial of dangerous driving leads to them repeating that behaviour on other streets &the cycle begins again. Your Fawdon colleagues campaign on RegentRd is a good example of this. There’s a real need for a “drive safely around bairns” campaign before more children are hurt in collisions.

…drivers complain vociferously their access being limited but fail to acknowledge that this is a natural consequence of the standard of driving on the route. This leads to 2 undesirable consequences- either the complaints lead to the Council cancelling much needed schemes (eg Streets for People)…

7. Final point re 5&6: there is a need for the Council to have a very hard conversation with motorists as there is now a clear pattern of behaviour on streets near the Regent Centre (& elsewhere): some drivers drive illegally & dangerously; Council introduces road safety measures to stop this;…

…This lack of basic info makes us wonder if the Transport Team is fully briefing the FB operator. The result was that v misleading impression of the scheme was given by the replies inc that the camera was only to make money. We’ve had members v upset by this as their children use that route.

6. Re (5) a good example is the recent FB post on the new camera on Christon Rd where the FB operator did not explain that both cameras were put in place was due to drivers ignoring no entry signs & red lights & driving through crossings on the wrong side of the road while school kids were crossing…

5. Basic information re Gos High St is not included in consultations etc. Including air pollution, collisions, induced demand & LTN1/20 standards. This leads to endless requests from residents that just can’t be acted on eg “restore traffic to 2 lanes & it will flow like water”..

Gosforth High Street Bus Lane Decision - SPACE for Gosforth Newcastle City Council has confirmed the outcome of its Gosforth High Street bus lane trial. In a Twitter/X post featuring a long out-of-date picture of Gosforth High Street, the Council announced the ...

4. Assurances made to our members at consultations by the Transport Team that the HighSt lanes would be replaced by LTNs so students could cycle safely
west of the HighSt conveniently forgotten.
5. No addressing of our concerns re the increase in collisions following the last stretch of bus lane.

Bike lanes to be removed from Gosforth High Street - SPACE for Gosforth Newcastle City Council has published plans that include the removal of 500m of cycle lanes from Gosforth High Street, including the protected cycle lane from Salters Road to Regent Farm Road.

3. Active Travel is presumably the Council & not the Mayor & as you know we have major concerns re the recent HighSt/ RegentCentre plan including:
1. Plans ignoring the LTN1/20 principles of good cycle design
2. Cycle routes removed from the High St & ignoring the needs to children cycling to school

SENRUG - The South East Northumberland Rail User Group

2. The other public transport questions are better addressed to @northeastptug.bsky.social. One question to you re the Regent Centre - does your party support the SENRUG airport plan? It needs discussing by Newcastle politicians it would increase RC rail services & destinations.

1. Just the Chronicle report. It’s good the Regent Centre is getting an upgrade - it’s an important transport hub & we hope it’s original role as an interchange can be revived when franchising is introduced & bus /metro can be better integrated. There are regular calls on Gosforth FB pages for this.

This is disappointing- speeding is a real problem in our community. Having a standard street design around schools would help as it would make it clearer to motorists what is expected behaviour.

Plus 20mph seems to work well in Wales judging by reports of lower premiums.

The APPG Play documents highlight the regional unevenness of England’s adventure playgrounds.

Just one in the whole of the north-east (the amazing Shiremoor Adventure Playground).

Questions to answer about our coach station.

1. Why & how long has the Coach Station been shut? @northeastptug.bsky.social

2. Why are the coaches using JDSt - it has no facilities?

3. Why can’t the Council stop them?

The actual coach station is near the Redheugh Bridge - much better to stop there than trail emissions through Grainger Town.

The Northumberland Line accepts POP cards - the Hexham Line doesn’t. Hence the cheaper fares.

The simple solution to this problem would be to extend POP to the Hexham Line.

Even better to extend POP to local services on the East Coast mainline & the Sunderland Line - as well as the buses!

Plea to end 'two-tier' transport system hurting areas cut off from Metro The North East mayor has been urged to revive the long-held ambition of creating a modern public transport network for the West End of Newcastle

Compare and contrast - Newcastle actually did have the vision for trams earlier in the century, but the plans was scrapped for buses.

37% of households in our city don’t have access to a car, it would be good if their transport needs got as much attention as free parking in hospitals.

Case Study: Nottingham Workplace Parking Levy How it has reduced congestion in the city In 2012, Nottingham took the unprecedented step to introduce a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL). Covering the whole City Council administrative area, the levy was...

There was a lot of opposition to the WPL. When it was first announced.
But the benefits speak for themselves after 14 years.

We often talk about your trams & the levy in the NE. The West End of Newcastle has wanted the Tyne & Wear Metro extended to that area for decades or failing that trams. It’s spoken of as being too difficult - but your trams show how it can be done.

This is a great example of the benefits the Nottingham workplace parking levy has brought to that city.

More like a reflection on an axis - they are on the positive side for transport (multimodal exploiting modern technology) whereas we’re on the negative (hard to walk & cycle with an air pollution problem).

He’s right in that local councillors do work hard re litter picking, planting stuff, removing graffiti, reporting potholes etc

But before the elections we would like to hear from different parties on air pollution, rubbish & recycling, increasing walking & cycling, funding the parks- the hard stuff

We do need more bike racks at the RVI though - members report that it’s difficult to find an empty one & not uncommon for people to have to use the fence. In a city hospital near an Air Quality Management Area it makes sense to help those who can to cycle to leave the car park for those who can’t.

Really interesting read - Newcastle Council consulted on improving the street ends on GosforthHighSt 10 years ago but didn’t implement it. Disappointing as current layout does affect pedestrians eg 1 junction if you are pushing a pram (so can’t stand at the kerb) you can’t see approaching traffic.

What makes side road junctions pedestrian-friendly? ForewordThis post has a companion written by Robert Weetman. We have been working collaboratively on something which we think needs to be more widely known, but we also thought it might be fun and …

In my work on side road junction designs, we came up with a model which can be simply measured.

If rules H2/170 are a good thing (they are) what are the conditions we need to create where drivers are "likely" to give way to pedestrians?

New pothole machine sees 3,000sqm of Gateshead roads patched up in three months The arrival of the Pothole Pro has been hailed a success thus far with 3,000sqm of roads improved

We’re definitely seeing some deep / large potholes in #Gosforth & we’re pleased you’re talking about this as we need councillors to pothole maintenance. We were wondering how #Newcastle is managing compared to #Gateshead given they have their new pothole busting machine.
