The approach was inspired by previous publications for Ebola virus by Anders Fomgaard et al., but without manual addition of MagnaPure buffer to blood collection tubes. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...).

Why: Even with low VHF suspicion, BSL-3 + full PPE is standard for handling whole blood to perform blood smears. Lysing at blood collection cuts exposure risk to staff and allows LAMP dx at BSL-2. Practical, scalable, and deployable—no smears, no suits, no delay.

When: in critically ill returning travelers where malaria is likely, but VHF can't be completely excluded. Just to be clear: not intended/validated for use in confirmed or high-probability VHF cases!

Enhancing safety of rapid and accurate malaria diagnosis in patients at risk for viral haemorrhagic fever - Malaria Journal Background Malaria and viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) have overlapping symptomatology, creating clinical and diagnostic challenges within, and in travellers returning from, co-endemic areas. Rapid and...

🧪New paper out! Together with parasitologists from AmsterdamUMC and Rijnstate hospital we tested a faster & safer way to diagnose malaria when VHFs can't be completely ruled out using Zymo tubes + LAMP -> no more need for full BSL-3 gear. Read more: malariajournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....
