If you want an interesting and accessible short story collection, I quite enjoyed “After the Quake” by Haruki Murakami
I’m not exactly sure why reading is so intimidating for vast portions of the population (I’m guessing a significant factor is being assigned challenging work at school at a young age) but once you get past that initial hurdle it is really not anymore difficult to enjoy than any other form of art.
Highly recommend short stories for folks trying to get back into reading. Less intimidating than a novel and easier to parse than poetry. Also they often come in collections so if you like it you can just read the next story and pretty soon you’ve read a goddamn book.
