This is a picture of the cover of the book βRumpole of the Baileyβ by John Mortimer. It shows a cartoon figure of Rumpole dressed as a lawyer and holding an umbrella like a sword. He is arm in arm with the statue of Justice.
Loved reading these books. John Mortimer was a lovely figure of liberal humanism from a gentler age.
This is the cover of the novel Absolute Beginners by Colin MacInnes published by Penguin Books in 1959. The picture is a drawing of a man wearing a suit and sitting on a bed. The man and the wall behind him are grey and white. There is a picture of a woman on the wall behind the man and the woman is in white against a background of red and blue colour. The bedspread is red.
My mum and dad bought this in the early 1960s. It's written through the eyes of a teenage freelance photographer who travels around London on his scooter. The book has a tolerance for drug users and the LGBT community (unusual for its time) and a vivid description of the Notting Hill race riots.
Book cover of My Turn by Johan Cruyff showing a picture of Johan Cruyff in a Netherlands shirt. The image is on an orange background and Cruyff's name is in stylish white capitals.
ππ (emojiis of blue heart and green, red and blue books). I read this book with my best Johan Cruyff accent and I loved the book, as I love Johan. I'm posting up book covers of books that I have on my shelves to see how many days I can keep doing it. 3 days now. Go me.
Love Clive James!
