Fascinating article about Claire Douglas, who was married to J.D. Salinger at the height of his literary fame and who served as the model for his character Franny Glass. After their divorce in 1967, she eventually became a highly-respected Jungian analyst and scholar.
This jumped out at me as well. I suppose Sifton could claim the 2015 deal contained rather than ended Iran's nuclear program, but to leave out mention of it and Trump's destruction of it is journalistically irresponsible.
Thereβs a big trove of early-1960s live recordings of the John Coltrane quartet on the way. The Frank Tiberi tapes have long been a grail quest for Trane fans.
Hopefully not running for president!
Bingo! The defense offered here just validates Youngmanβs point further.
Um, the point of Youngmanβs repost of your tweet remains the same. You evidently approve of highlighting AOCβs βword saladβ quote while the NYT continues to sanewash our demented president, who spouts far worse βword saladsβ all the time. Highlighting that quote proves Youngmanβs point in general.
Jazz writer @markstryker.bsk.social joins me today to discuss βBest of the Best: Jazz From Detroit,β the documentary film adaptation of his book about Detroit jazz. Weβll be playing lots of Detroit jazz as well by Kenny Burrell, Barry Harris, Ron Carter, Geri Allen & more. On wfiu.org from 3-5 pm.
Theyβre concentration camps. Yes, we are building concentration camps in America.
Me neither.
Gosh, what a surprise! Whatever could they have been chatting about? π€
This was and is real presidential leadershipβnot the current narcissistic, hate-driven clown-car show thatβs destroying our constitutional republic.
I sure do miss this beautiful First Couple. They continue to represent the best of what this country is and what it could be.
Beautifully said.
My favorite First Couple ever. Somebody said βpeak Americaββ¦ yes. Camelot II, and it was better and longer than the original.
Love this guy so much. A ray of hope in the hellscape of DT 2.0
This is a BFD: the Tiberi tapes are coming! Saxophonist Frank Tiberi frequently taped John Coltrane's performances in the early 1960s, rumored to amount to 115 hours. For Coltrane fans this stash is akin to Dean Benedetti's trove of Charlie Parker recordings, & some of it is finally coming out now.
Always interested to read Ethan's thoughts about the Marsalis effect, but this also includes an excellent writeup about "Jazz: The Experimenters," a 1965 TV program featuring Charles Mingus & Cecil Taylor, w/commentary from Ralph Ellison and Martin Williams.
Pathetic. Media by oligarchs for oligarchs.
This was my first Clifford Brown album, in a time long ago and far away. I still think itβs one of the most gorgeous trumpet records ever made.
On what legal grounds are these observers being arrested?!
NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani swinging by the Louis Armstrong House & Museum in Queens to kick off Black History Month. Free admission this Saturday! I visited for the first time in 2024β¦ a religious experience for any Armstrong and jazz fan.
Nate Chinen's rundown on last night's jazz Grammy winners.
Observer following ICE in her car & recording with a dash cam gets blocked off & agents leap out of the car, coming at her with guns drawn, then force her to the ground & arrest her. More βf warrants, f legalityβ talk from these state terrorists.
New Sun Ra documentary coming from PBS American Masters in February.
A great male role model for boys growing up in the 1970s. Happy birthday, sir!
Where have I heard this before? π€
