I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

Just over one week to the @ciliplgbtq.bsky.social webinar where I'll talk about being an ally to trans, non-binary & gender non-conforming people.

We're a tiny minority under ongoing attack - allies are essential.

Tuesday 27 May, 1-2pm on Teams and open to all!

It would also be nice if cis people with platforms actually spoke out publicly for a change and didn’t just message their trans friends privately to say that it sucks but keep quiet otherwise to avoid losing their newspaper columns

First work day at #UKSG25 is over πŸ₯‚ - stand out for me was the Library CEO with Tony Zanders, @jessicagardner.bsky.social and @kmdames.bsky.social talking about library leadership. Authentic, vulnerable and people-centred - a reminder that in a world of e-resources & OA it’s people who create change

Some really challenging questions (and interesting answers…) around the ethics and inequalities around AI, really brilliant to see our @uksg.bsky.social community holding us to account. And our fourth panel member, ChatGPT is holding their own πŸ˜‚ #UKSG25

'We love working closely with our advisors except in this case, where we seemingly sprang this massive change on them post facto. We hope by extending this service by a few months you'll all stop complaining, even though the complaints were substantial/existential as well as temporal. Community <3'

And super-helpful reminder of @epicbayj.bsky.social's Inclusive Recruitment Checklist. I read it at the time, but I could definitely benefit from going though it afresh and thinking about how it applies to the new role I'm advertising soon (leadership role around student library experience)

Rebecca Lawrence appointed as new Chief Executive of the British Library Rebecca Lawrence has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the British Library and will take up the role from 2 January 2025. She succeeds Sir Roly Keating, who has led the Library since 2012.

New Chief Executive appointed at the British Library. No background in libraries, so I hope she is a fast learner. It couldn’t be a harder job right now. www.bl.uk/press/rebecc...

"Giving students accommodations is a disservice to employers. Credentialing is a key good offered by universities by giving some students more help than others undermines it, says Justin Noia. October 23, 2024. Justin Noia. Recently, one of my students requested the use of a personal "memory aid" - a pre-written notecard - in an exam. According to my institution, the accommodation was "required for equal access," even though a memory aid obviously undermind the evaluation's major purpose: to text the student's ability to recall class content. I had to grade her exam like everyone else's as *if* she hadn't used a memory aid. Her grade, therefore, was a lie."

Times Higher Ed has a column today about getting rid of accommodations for students with disabilities. It is breathtakingly ableist. It argues for the exclusion of people with disabilities from higher ed. I am not linking: it's click bait, but you can see the opening paragraph below.

Whilst it is so important to understand the policies so you can maximise support and be prepared for difficult conversations, being flexible & compassionate and not focusing on tiny rules goes such a long way. Being black & white can infantilise - if you can give someone leeway who deserves it, do

For me it's that this is a two-way relationship; you will have sleepless nights worrying, and can do a lot to support your people but they also need to put the work in where they need to make changes. Also how different people are in how they need support, process info, what they deem 'professional'
