🧵It’s a new year, but at least one thing’s still the same: The death penalty does not make our communities safer. Decades of research show that the death penalty does not deter crime or protect the most vulnerable from harm.
2026 @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social @gavinnewsom.bsky.social has the historic opportunity to cement his legacy as a courageous leader who stands up for what he believes in by commuting all death sentences!

👀 HISTORY LESSON:
1972 – D•ath penalty struck down for being arbitrarily applied.
1976 – It came roaring back.
2025 – Still arbitrary. Still cruel. Still WRONG.
Let’s be the generation that ends it.

📅On this day in 1972, Furman v. Georgia temporarily stopped the death penalty in the U.S. Not because the punishment itself went against the Constitution's ban on "cruel and unusual punishment ", but because of how arbitrarily and capriciously it was applied.
The guys on TN’s death row know that we are walking today, and they decided to walk 8 miles in solidarity with us. They have to walk in a circle inside the prison - about 50 rounds is a mile - so they’re walking about 400 rounds as we walk 8 miles today - for mercy & an end to the death penalty.
🛑 Ex*cutions are still happening in America — right now.
In our names. With our tax dollars.
Serious doubt surrounds #OscarSmith's conviction — DNA found on the weapon doesn't match him.
