I’ve said this many times by now but if people would read theory they’d understand this. In particular Johnson’s Soul by Soul chapter about the writing of masculinity via sexual assault of the enslaved was when it became clear to me. Levels of forcing others to accept one’s own “forbidden” actions.
My goodness we suck at this.
White people: The leaders in racial justice since never.
From the people who brought you racialized enslavement of Black people. And the initiators of state-managed extermination of Native Americans.
Comes the mantra, “We also ended those things after we were forced to, so give us some credit.”
This is a lesson I specifically call out in my history classes. The trauma of atrocities doesn’t ennoble us.

Seriously, if your method of developing racial justice is to center the needs of white people then it’s just white supremacy with a veneer of kindness.

I talk about moderating (banning) Holocaust denial on AskHistorians in all my courses to help students see why historical literacy matters in a real world context. Last semester, a student stuck around to office hours to share that he's seen denial points online
A valuable piece in understanding the changing Democratic policies and also as an antidote to antisemitic (and uncritically idiotic) conspiratorialism.
He addresses that to some degree when he talks about the donors seeing themselves as fighting for the underdog and the long-term pro-zionists having long seen themselves as defenders of Israel. It’s not a full investigation but it was a nod.
Such an important point. It forces us to remember that we aren’t “always right” and must investigate ourselves constantly and be able to change.

the genocide in Gaza is obviously horrific, but it's in line with Israel's longstanding history of apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and violence directed at palestinian people.
I think the central thing that people like—those who do like them of course—about the two is that they frame everything in terms of positive pluralist society that cares for all.

The US accepting ICJ jurisdiction would be one of the most consequential and positive actions we could take internationally. This includes offering up the past 5 presidents for trial if requested.

Professors do not indoctrinate students in class but teach them how to think critically and openly.
In the wake of SB 37, University of Houston has introduced syllabi "checklists" and "certifications" to prevent so-called indoctrination in the classroom. This clearly threatens academic freedom.

Sometimes we act as if history isn’t walking among us. But it is. People carry the past with them. So let’s live today such that people carry a better past tomorrow.
Today was a special day. As I walked through My Lai, just after sunrise, an old man called out and invited me inside his house. It turned out to be Do Ba - the small child that Hugh Thompson, Larry Colburn and Glen Andreotta saved on March 16, 1968.
And as an aside, I do Holocaust studies (via memory and education) so I’m as capable as it is possible to be at detatchment (for my own psyche), but I think I’ve only a couple of times been as irate and angry at a historical topic as at My Lai.
