Iโ€™m delighted to see โ€˜The Caliph and the Falconsโ€™ take to the skies at Early Medieval Europe! I had a blast writing this with @medivalist.bsky.social as we followed the extraordinary journey of falcons from Scandinavia all the way to Baghdad. #medievalsky

The academic equivalent of "you can judge someone by how they act with the server" is "you can judge someone by how they act with students whose success isn't tied to them/doesn't reflect on them" or maybe just "you can judge someone by how they act with students"

Strongly encourage all academics, novelists, reporters, bloggers, whatever to just email this account and state that you want to opt out of this idiocy.

Overload them with emails and make them regret they ever tried this shit.

Ahab Bdaiwi tweets:

Iโ€™m afraid the reading of this statement thatโ€™s gaining traction online is done by non-specialists who donโ€™t understand Shii clerical culture. Sistani didnโ€™t issue this; his local office in Mashhad did. It is not a fatwa. And it doesnโ€™t call communal defence.

My first thought when I saw this was why is Sistani writing in Farsi?

Saudi Civil Defense: Projectile Strikes Al-Kharj Residential Area, Leaving Two Dead and 12 Injured RIYADH, Mar 8: The Saudi Civil Defense reported that a military projectile fell on a residential site in Al-Kharj Governorate on Sunday, resulting in two deaths...

A strike on a residential area (polite way of saying labour accommodation) in Saudi has left two dead (Indian national and a Bangladeshi national), and 12 injuredโ€”all Bangladeshis.

The attacks are killing migrant workers whoโ€™ve come to earn a living. Theyโ€™re the ones bearing the brunt of this war.

4 deaths in the UAE now. Many more injuries. Nearly every victim is from the Middle East, South Asia or Africa.

Yet media coverageโ€”esp British coverageโ€”of Dubai continues to focus on โ€œinfluencersโ€ & wealthy Westerners, reproducing the very racism & classism it claims to oppose.

Desalination plans have also reportedly been attacked in the Gulf States. Hard to see how attacking a water sources could ever EVER be legally justifiedโ€ฆ.as if that even matters to anyone anymore

If it is confirmed that the US has directly attacked the Qeshm desalination facility, this government would join Saddam Husseinโ€™s 90-91 attacks in Kuwait and Houthi strikes vs. Shuqaiq in 2019/2022. Not good company for the US.

Iraqโ€™s at the Epicenter of the Regional Fallout of Confrontation With Iran - AGSI The U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran has exposed Iraqโ€™s structural fragilities: territorial permeability, economic monoculture, energy dependence, and politically mediated sovereignty.

If export routes are disrupted, energy supplies curtailed, and political paralysis prolonged, Iraqโ€™s recent stabilization could unravel. The conflict may not be of Iraqโ€™s making, yet its consequences could decisively shape the countryโ€™s next chapter. โ€“ Abbas Kadhim agsi.org/analysis/ira...

Oil Markets Brace for Monday Surge After U.S.-Israeli Strikes on Iran - AGSI There was a growing war risk premium in the oil markets tied to escalating regional tensions; the shift from shadow confrontation to direct military action changes the calculus.

There has not been any confirmed large-scale disruption to Middle Eastern crude production or exports at this stage. However, the marketโ€™s sensitivity reflects how thin the buffer for disruption currently is. โ€“ Kate Dourian agsi.org/analysis/oil...

Militarily, Iraqโ€™s geography places it at the center of the confrontation. The country hosts U.S. forces while maintaining deep political, economic, and security ties with Iran. This dual alignment transforms Iraqi territory into strategic space contested by others. โ€“ Abbas Kadhim
