“If SINNERS becomes the third movie by a Black filmmaker to win Best Picture but not Best Director, then we can’t pretend the director’s Blackness isn’t the main reason why,” writes @thirdmanmovies.bsky.social about why Ryan Coogler deserves the Oscar.
Grandmother Fish is the first book to teach evolution to preschoolers. Kids love learning that they are part of the great family of life on Earth, and they love wiggling like Grandmother Fish and hooting like Grandmother Ape. Now in Chinese, Japanese, and Italian.

My long review of the 2025 edition of Dougal Dixon's The New Dinosaurs has just been published in Historical Biology. What is the 'use' of Speculative Zoology and how does this book connect to the history of dinosaur research? www.tandfonline.com/eprint/YTPSK... #SpecZoo #SpecBio
Amazing how much damage one malignant narcissist can cause.

Republicans thought they had Texas on lock—they were WRONG. Nearly 4.5 million voters just turned the state upside down, and for the first time since 2020, Democrats actually OUTNUMBERED the GOP. This isn't just a record; it's the regime’s worst nightmare.
See the numbers they’re trying to hide:
This is figure 8. Artistic reconstruction of the filter-feeding pterosaur Barikibu waridza gen et sp. nov. in the Early Cretaceous Romualdo Formation environment. The spinosaurid in the background represents the putative predator that produced the regurgitalite described herein. Author: Julio Lacerda.
A paper in Scientific Reports presents the discovery of the first known filter-feeding pterosaur from the tropics, called Bakiribu waridza, which was found in the Santana Group of Brazil. go.nature.com/3LFon6L #Paleosky 🧪

I've finished a new Dancy Flammarion novelette, "Gethsemane," to be released later this year by Subterranean Press as a small hardback. Illustrator to be announced (the below illustration was done by Steve Leiber for the Dark Horse Alabaster comic). This is my first Dancy story since 2019.

I've been listening to an audiobook about airships (zeppelins, dirigibles, or blimps, depending on locale), and how they NEVER really worked, but governments had invested so much in them that they were determined to MAKE them work, wasting fortunes & years & lives
This post is not about airships
A study in Nature shows that the earliest known ankylosaurs had uniquely elaborate body armour, including a spiky ornament on their tail. These extreme armour features are unlike those of any other vertebrate, including other ankylosaurs later in their evolutionary history. #Paleosky 🧪

FABL = fore-aft basal length.
Since this find, remains of eudromaeosaurian theropods have turned up in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, as well as other localities in Alabama, all once a part of the Appalachian subcontinent during the Late Cretaceous.
The cf. Saurornithoides sp. tooth I recovered from the Mooreville Chalk of W. Alabama in '98, first evidence of Troodontidae from SE Appalachia. So tiny (2.8mm FABL), I first mistook it for an odd fish tooth. SEM photomicrograph courtesy Fernbank Sci. Center, ATL. Pub. in '04. #paleosky #dinosaurs

MAGA Unreality vs the World
The U.S. government is in the hands of people who are fully detached from reality. That is a major weakness for the regime – but also a source of further radicalization.
