The asymmetry of the value placed on human life is so striking. Israel has a goal to recover 40-year-old remains; to do so, it invades a sovereign country, and the lives of 26 Lebanese are an afterthought. Their names not even worth printing in the New York Times.

Netflix Backs Out of Bid for Warner Bros., Paving Way for an Ellison Takeover
The richest man owns X.
The second and third richest men control Google.
The fourth richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The fifth richest man owns The Washington Post.
And now the sixth richest could soon take over both Paramount and Warner Bros.
See the problem here?

Whenever i get ragebaited or simply overwhelmed and helpless, i try to redirect my energy to appreciating the amazing kindness and love of people who inspire in the community and then think about ways to follow their lead. Thereβs a lot of that in Minnesota these days

It's interesting to look at how Epstein directly, via hundreds of thousands of emails with his pedo buddies in academia, made US academia incredibly hostile to women for *decades*.
How many Emma Noethers never were, even before any of it was put into legislation?

I'd like to add that like in all industries, when we stop understanding how our tools work, we become entirely dependent on the corporate entities that own the mold. We are trading the ability to build and repair for the convenience of being permanent tenants in someone else's infrastructure/subs.

A photo of a vigil at MLK Park in Minneapolis after the murder of Alex Pretti.
Tonight, my Minneapolis neighborhood gathered on street corners and in our local park to mourn Alex Pretti.
This is our FOURTH vigil in eight months. No community should have to go through what we're going through.

The National Science Foundation sign on our Eisenhower Av building is now gone.
The NSF mural in the foyer is removed and torn off in sheets.
We were supposed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the agency in May 2025. That never happened.

A 35 year old letter to the editor, written by a very ballsy 15 year old, about the Rodney King verdict.
Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, itβs probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, Iβm sorry and also welcome.

I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at leastβAI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if weβd not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagementβyou can only cite a fake paper if youβre not in the habit of reading the papers you cite

President Trump hosted dozens of wealthy spenders for a dinner on Wednesday in exchange for what he called the βtremendous amounts of moneyβ they agreed to donate to construct a $200 million ballroom addition to the White House, a project that has sparked concerns from ethics watchdogs.
βWe have a lot of legends in the room tonight, and thatβs why we're here to celebrate you, because you gave,β Mr. Trump said in the East Room. βThey wanted to have a ballroom, and it never happened because they didnβt have a real estate person.β
More than three dozen corporate executives and wealthy businesspeople attended the dinner, where Mr. Trump expressed gratitude for their opening their checkbooks for his long-desired state ballroom. Representatives from companies including Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft and Lockheed Martin were in attendance.
Meta, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, was the latest tech giant to remove content in response to government pressure. Last week, Apple and Google removed apps used to track immigration agents from their app stores. That included ICEBlock, a free app with hundreds of thousands of users, which let people anonymously share the locations of ICE agents within a five-mile radius.
Frustrating to hear people confine their concerns about AI & quantum computing to the possibility that "bad actors" may acquire them. Let's be clear: Big Tech cos., with their stranglehold on social media, search engines, & phones (& eagerness to capitulate to an authoritarian regime) ARE bad actors
