Attempt to save three trees shows limits of public’s power The city broke its own rules. Now it wants to change them.

Let me take you back to the U.N. Plaza in early 2025:

The city broke its own rules to remove a handful of trees, then sought and abandoned an effort to fine itself for the infraction. www.tlvoice.org/tenderloin-t...

β€œA department head, somebody, made the decision: Screw the citizenry, screw the protocol.”

That's how one commissioner summed up this saga.

Well, now that protocol could change.

In SF and the Tenderloin, people have BIG FEELINGS about tree removals β€” and a proposal to limit appeals from the public.

Wanna know why? READ THIS. (From @tlvoice.bsky.social and @laurawenus.bsky.social)

The city slated the trees for removal. Urban canopy activists appealed. The trees were cut down anyway.
At a time when legislators are considering whether to reduce public input on tree removals, we look back on an incident where that input was ignored.

Between the ambiguously written headline and your sarcasm, I hoped that maybe all was well.

All is not well.

Michael Nulty, a Tenderloin community leader, coordinator and do-gooder, did a great job with this article.

As a supporter, I'm especially invested in the success of your operation. So this kind of check-in is very welcomed. And breaking of the fourth wall to do it just makes me feel like we're all in this together. It's a good thing.

@plante.bsky.social On your latest episode, the segment (for subscribers) giving an update about the business side... It did NOT feel at all navel gazey!

I'd actually love a bit more of this, if you could tolerate doing it. I'll bet others feel similar.

Upon the announcement of the Steam Machine's slated 2026 launch, I didn't spot coverage that matched Chris'. He stepped back and pulled all the key elements together, revealing a grand narrative that was easy to grasp.

Par for the course, for him. So. You need to check him out.

One of my favorite segments covered the history of Valve, the Steam Machine, and Gabe Newell's efforts to tear down Sony and Microsoft's walled gardens and make gaming (and computing?) more accessible to all. It might mean that we finally, finally enter the Year of Linux!

Post Games is consistently smart and fun, and well... Idk how to otherwise say it but @plante.bsky.social is just obviously such a damn decent person that listening provides the warm fuzzies. Listen! We all need more warm fuzzies!

Mayor’s Budget Proposal Sparks Debate Over SF Climate Priorities San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s recommended budget would reduce city support for the Environment Department.

Mayor Lurie’s recommended budget would slash flexible funding for the city’s Environment Department and withhold General Fund support for the Climate Equity Hub, which helps low-income households install green home retrofits.

This is the kind of community work that doesn't get written about. It happens in the background. It's what I think people mean when they describe "social infrastructure." Many in SF's Tenderloin are sad to see @michaelbenvuong.bsky.social go, but they're also excited about what's next for him.
