I remember being floored when the title legendary shows up at the last moment for you to catch and then the final battle starts off with the two legendaries facing off. And all the gym leaders showing up to help was a good touch too. To say nothing of the trek through the castle itself.

Of course, I still love these games, flaws and all, for how they resonated with me when I played them (and because I like the pokemon designs and all that). But looking back... Yeah, Pokemon can, and has been, better story-wise. Heck, compare the Giovanni reveal to the Ferris Wheel scene.

Honestly I think you hit the nail on the head for me, the final confrontation with N and Ghetsis does a lot of heavy lifting lol. It was the first time Pokemon had applied the stakes usually reserved to the villain team arc to the primary champion fight and it stuck with 15-year-old me.

It's so disheartening watching studios close as the industry collapses because I do really feel like games are better than they've ever been. So much endless passion and creativity and dedication in every developer I've ever interacted with, only to watch it all crumble other poor leadership.
