Scenic image showing a clearing in the woods with deciduous trees just starting to leaf out. This photo was taken from the Heart Lake Trail in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This trail provides access to varied habitats, stunning views of the High Peaks, a Nature Museum, and a fern garden with interpretive signs. I often see Common Loons on the lake.

A small gray, black and white bird is perched on a branch. Itβs a Black-capped Chickadee, one of two species of chickadees we see here in the Adirondack Mountains. The other is the Boreal Chickadee, which has a similar plumage pattern, with a brown cap and much smaller white cheek patch. I rarely catch a glimpse of the Boreal Chickadee, but the Black-capped Chickadee is probably the most common bird I see in the winter, when they flock to our feeders. They survive our harsh winters by caching food in bark, dead leaves, or knotholes. They spend very cold nights roosting in thick vegetation or cavities, tucking their heads under their scapular feathers to conserve body heat.
For the alt #birdoftheday theme #perfectlyperched, I submit a #BlackcappedChickadee, enjoying the winter sunshine on the Bloomingdale Bog Trail in the #AdirondackMountains of upstate New York. wildadirondacks.org/adirondack-w...

A yellow, black and gray bird is perched on a branch. This is a Magnolia Warbler β a songbird that breeds in dense conifers, particularly second-growth spruce trees. The Magnolia Warbler is one of the many misnamed birds. The bird has no connection to magnolias. Both the species name (magnolia) and the nonscientific name β Magnolia Warbler β trace back to 1810, when ornithologist Alexander Wilson collected a warbler from a magnolia tree in Mississippi. Wilson apparently recommended the more descriptive name "Black-and-Yellow Warbler," and some 19th century sources lists the species by that name. However, the inappropriate "Magnolia Warbler" is the name in use today.
Todayβs #BirdOfTheDay theme is #SongBirds. Hereβs a #MagnoliaWarbler showing off his bright yellow belly and bold black necklace. wildadirondacks.org/adirondack-b...

This is a scenic shot of a small waterfall on West Branch of the Ausable River in the Adirondack Mountains near Lake Placid in upstate New York. The Adirondack region is characterized by a radial drainage pattern, with streams and rivers flowing outward toward the edge of the dome, in some cases following the dominant north-northeast valleys. The Ausable River, like the Saranac River, flows north, draining into the St Lawrence via Lake Champlain, while the Schroon River flows south, draining into the Hudson.

The image captures a river bank with wildflowers displaying red flowers. The plants are Cardinal Flowers β a native wildflower that produces showy red flowers in late summer and thrives in marshes and the shores of streams, ponds, and lakes in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This photo was taken at McCasland Bridge on the Saranac River.

A large dark brown bird with a white head and open wings is perched on some debris in the middle of a river by the Hulls Falls Road in Keene. This road, which is located in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Part in upstate New York, is a favorite haunt of birders in all seasons, because you never know what you are going to find along the river. I have also happened upon some nice mammal species, like River Otters and American Mink.

A small wood warbler is perched on a branch in summer. The bird is a The Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia). As the name implies, this bird sports a black and white striped crown and back. The photo was taken on the John Brown Farm trails near Lake Placid in upstate New York. This stylish warbler is a habitat generalist. It breeds in a variety of deciduous and mixed woodlands, in both mature and second-growth forests. In New York State, the Black-and-white Warbler occupies a variety of breeding habitats, including alpine krummholz, early to mid-successional forest, mature and second growth deciduous and mixed forests, and forested wetlands. It is most abundant in early successional forest conditions.
The alt #birdoftheday theme is #black&white. Hereβs an attractive #BlackandWhiteWarbler, thoughtfully posing for me against a pretty background of green leaves.

This photo was taken on the Heron Marsh Trail at the Paul Smiths VIC β a nature preserve. Heron Marsh hosts a lot of wetland plants and birds. Itβs a great place to see ducklings in the spring and early summer.

A gray and white bird with a very long tail is perched on the branch of a conifer in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. These birds used to be called Gray Jays, but Canadian birders lobbied to have the name changed, in hopes that the Gray Jay would be named the national bird of Canada. A bill to formalize the designation was introduced last May, but itβs still in committee.

The image shows a mountain range off in the distance, with a snow-covered field in the foreground. This photo was taken on one of the walking trails at Heaven Hill. The trails go through a wide variety of habitats, including meadows, old fields, successional forest, hardwood forest, mixed conifer-hardwood forest, and several types of swamps. It's very close to where I live, so I go there often for the great scenic views and the wide variety of wildlife and plants I see along the trails.

An eye-catching gray bird with a bright orange belly is sitting on a branch with blue sky in the background. This is an American Robin. Here in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, we seldom see these handsome birds during the cold winter months, so for us a robin sighting is a reassuring sign that spring is coming. Spring actually doesnβt arrive here until April.

A very dapper black bird with white back, black underparts, and a yellow patch on the nape is sitting on the top of a fence post. This is one of the Bobolinks who breed on the hay meadows at Heaven Hill Farm near Lake Placid in upstate New York. Bobolinks winter in southern South America every year. They return to our part of the Adirondack Mountains in May.
