Seafood City, an international Filipino grocery chain, brought its late night dance party to Chicago for the first time over the weekend. It was a blast. And itβs in the Tribune!
Our slow-motion catastrophes are eclipsed by our emergent catastrophes, but they're still catastrophes and we're still suffering them.
They donβt think it will kill them. Iβve seen anti vaxxers refer to measles as a βmild rash that will go away by itself.β

Which is ironic because, as Nuzzo points out, if we could keep vaccination rates above 95% across the country, conversations about surveillance and funding would become irrelevant. Vaccination is the safest, most effective and cheapest way to keep everyone measles free.
Before, any measles outbreak would have meant regular CDC updates & advice to ensure all children get vaccinated. In the current crisis, one of the few measles related CDC posts says itβs wrong to see the outbreaks as a βpublic policy failureβ & links to an op ed that says vaccines are unreliable.
The Trump regimeβs worst policies are colliding in Camp East Montana, the nation's largest ICE detention facility, and creating even more human suffering.
The cruelty is endless.

The USβs wastewater surveillance system is much more robust than it was a few years ago thanks to supplemental funding for Covid 19 tracking. That system could help estimate measles numbers as clinical data lags behind. But, guess what, the Trump admin is planning to gut that, too.
This likely means we donβt even know how severe the current US measles crisis is, according to Nuzzo. The number of deaths we have seen already suggest there might be far more cases than the approximately 1100 that have been tracked.
Haha happy to answer but also I do not know!
When the admin took a hatchet to CDC $$ last year, it affected every tier of the system that tracks diseases, including measles, says @jennifernuzzo.bsky.social. Each case of measles is reported at the hospital level and makes it way up the chain into national data. That whole system has slowed.
Alonzo Plough, chief science director at the Robert Wood Johnson foundation, pointed out that One of the leaders at CDC βreferred to this dramatic and tragic increase in the cases of measles, and, in some states, deaths, as just the βcost of doing business.ββ Which sounds flippant at best.
Measles is a highly contagious virus. Itβs also one we know how to contain. But as cases in the US accelerate past 1000, the Trump admin is refusing to take obvious steps to mitigate the spread. My latest.

I love caves, inflatables and science communication. This month is #colorectal cancer awareness month - the disease that has been ruining me the last 20 months. Get a colonoscopy folks. Itβs not as fun as what Iβm doing here but it ainβt that bad either.
Thank you! Your post should add the request to those feeds I believe?
Hello Bluesky, I'm working on a story about colorectal cancer in younger adults. If you're under 50 and have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, or if you know someone else who fits this description who wants to talk about it, please reach out! DMS open. You can choose to be anonymous.

As measles is spreading domestically & abroad, the admin is still refusing to prioritize vaccine promotion. In their comment for this story, HHS was vague, didnβt mention vaccines & talked about protecting Americans foremost, when measles in particular requires international cooperation to prevent.
I would!!
Measles during pregnancy can cause:
miscarriage or stillbirth
premature birth (before the 37th week of pregnancy)
your baby having a low birthweight
It's important to get medical advice if you're pregnant and have been in close contact with someone who has measles.

Around the world, Nuzzo is worried people are relying on just getting measles βnaturallyβ to gain immunity.
βListen, this is a bad disease.β Nuzzo said. For those who survive, itβs thought to βbleedβ the immune system, making them more susceptible to other diseases, even ones theyβve had before.
The US has also pulled funding from the Global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network which is run by WHO. It helps identify measles cases globally and prevent travel related transmission. Measles is extremely contagious and can easily jump countries via international travel.
RFK Jr. has long promoted Wakefieldβs ideas and has amplified them with renewed force in his position as health secretary. βWe live in a global ecosystem, so when other countries hear the vaccine is not good enough for the Americans, they think maybe itβs not good for us either,β Nuzzo said.
The UK, one of 6 European counties that just lost elimination status, is βground zeroβ, for vaccine misinformation, says Jennifer Nuzzo, of Brownβs Pandemic Center. Andrew Wakefield, a former British physician, started the vaccine/autism myth. Now the UK has lost elimination status 2x in < 10 years.
The Trump administrationβs global havoc is unending.
My latest story is about how the Trump admin is amplifying anti vaxx conspiracies just as measles outbreaks are spreading across the globe; many countries have just lost elimination status, and others are on the brink.
There has never been a better time to accept and vocalize that Jews and the Israeli government are not the same thing. Yes, the Israeli government has worked hard for decades to make us believe opposing its actions is inherently antisemitic. But it isnβt true. It never was.
