But because Billy Corgan is unable to look at anything and not relate it directly to himself, clearly there must have been nefarious forces at work preventing people from accessing and loving this thing he made that sounded hardly anything like the sound he’d become famous for.
And no shade to Adore whatsoever, it’s a good record with a couple of the Pumpkins’ best singles coming off of it. But it was just flat out not what most people wanted to hear from the band that had given us the flaming, hook-heavy buzzsaw angst of “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” three years prior.
There’s a catty little line in this that says as much, but yeah it sure is a coincidence that Corgan thinks the CIA killed rock ‘n roll right around the time he decided to follow up his multiplatinum Grammy winning RAWK opus with a synthy, goth-tinged record influenced by the death of his mother.
