One challenge of working with media is we often don't get to shape how our work is presented. What gets published is ultimately their interpretation. It can be frustrating, but I also see value in the visibility it brings & in the conversations it sparks on the importance of Indigenous languages.
Those terms make it sound like our languages belong to the past. They also overlook the generations of tireless revitalization work that have been happening long before projects like mine.
I'm featured in this @cnn.com piece on AI & language revitalization: shorturl.at/f9CHA. I appreciate CNN for spotlighting this important issue and think the article itself highlights the work well. I've been hesitant to post, though, because of how the title frames our languages as "old" & "dying."
Even those of us most optimistic about the potential of AI in this space are deeply aware of the risks. Who builds the tools, how they're built, and who they serve matters.
Honored to have my work included alongside so many others pushing for culturally grounded innovation!

Something I really appreciate about this article is how the author centers the voices of Indigenous researchers, not just in our hopes for what AI can make possible for language revitalization, but in our concerns too.

Deeply disappointing statement by USC President Carol Folt, whose refusal to sign the AAC&U letter puts @usc.edu on the wrong side of history and undermines its faculty, staff, and students who are up to the challenge of defending academic freedom.

It was great to see them talk about their work, and also great to see just how much great undergraduate research is happening across campus - thereβs a ton!
Diego Cuadros and Jason Chamorro standing in front of their research posters.
Two of my students presented their research at this year's LMU Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Diego Cuadros presented his work on building chatbots for endangered languages and Jason Chamorro presented his research with Gabriel Twigg-Ho on task scheduling in online, stochastic environments.
It's not news that Trump lacks the compassion and competence to lead, but it's endlessly exhausting to be reminded of it every time he opens his mouth.
required to support renaming a natural landmark from its original indigenous name to honor a president who never set foot in Alaska and participated in the genocide of indigenous peoples - all while claiming to oppose renaming things, as if "Mount McKinley" were the original name.

"we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley where it should be and where it belongs."

It's always fun to talk about our work on using LLMs to help with language revitalization (24:00-30:00)!
As always, I'm grateful for our language carriers, whose work (past and ongoing) makes research like this possible.

Building machine translators for endangered languages is especially toughβnot just due to limited data, but because accuracy is *crucial*. When learners lack native speakers or reliable resources to correct mistakes, even small errors can have outsized consequences.

In June, at the AmericasNLP Workshop @ NAACL, we introduced an LLM-powered approach to machine translation for low/no-resource languages. I'm so excited about this direction and can't wait to share the progress we've made since! #StayTuned #AI #LanguageRevitalization #IndigenousInSTEM #AIForGood
