The ones without membranes are what I'd consider constructs. Something non-living that's been made alive by magic rather than birth.

Some have cores, but it's a talisman rather than a nucleus.

Others don't because they're literally a ghost forming a body out of the pond water or lava they died in

That's part of it.

My common slimes are more like bacterial cells of varying complexities, ranging from melon sized balls that just roll about eating whatever, to the humanoid greater slimes.

They have cores and membranes, and I normally use deep sea creatures in their designs

when it comes to 'sloppy' slimes, which is the unfortunate name my brain picked for slimes without a membrane, you start getting those issues.

Maybe their limbs are more formless, they have a lot of magical energy, or like you say, they use things they found to prop themselves up

I generally take slimes as being too varied to say there's one answer for how their shape is kept

A lot of my slimes have a bouncy, manipulable, permiable membrane, so their shape is held sorta like inflating a latex glove

That membrane generally has a thick slime layer outside too, but some don't

This actually came to mind because I've been making a list of features and design notes for a toxic slime girl

Realising that some slimes will be picky about pulling the stuff out of themselves that they can't digest, and others will just leave things like bones and spoons and stuff floating around inside themselves

Is it like a ritual?

Do some do it immediately, and some wait for cleaning day?
