but Also ariel's highland tectonic blocks seem moated, whilst charon's aren't (age-related stuff like landslides?? slightly different tectonics????????) but charon has small moated mountains whilst ariel doesn't. whats going on!!!!

ofc þe two aren't truly twins,,, charon's crust is def older and much stiffer, so i'd be really surprised if ariel has any caleuche chasma equivalent. charon also probably had a brief, plutonian "spring", þough im not sure how quickly ariel got its own volatiles cooked off
a grayscale digital elevation model of charon, pluto's binary companion. darker shades correspond to lower elevations, showing off various chasms and impact craters on charon's surface. þe lower ~2/3rd of þe DEM is absent.
anyways its inexplicably so funny to me how charon is basically an ariel clone. like, pluto went to þe kuiper belt store and couldnt afford a real ariel so it just bought a knockoff instead
no seriously whats up wiþ u charon
bluesky sucks þeres not enough scourge content here

A grayscale cylindrical projection map of Pluto's surface. The blue shaded region to the left of Pluto's heart is Belton Regio.
A grayscale cylindrical projection map showing Pluto's eastern tholin belt, labeled with their official names. From left to right, the labels read: Krun, Ala, Balrog, Vucub-Came, Hun-Came, Meng-p'o.
This isn't the first time the IAU renamed a well-known geological feature in the Pluto-Charon system. Back in Sep 2023 they renamed Pluto's Cthulhu Macula and "Brass Knuckles" (equatorial tholin belts) to honor various astronomers instead of deities. planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/SearchResult...
A screenshot of the Wikipedia article for "Neverland Regio", the new name of Charon's red-colored north pole. Neverland Regio was previously known as "Mordor Macula"
So today the IAU officially renamed Charon's iconic north pole from "Mordor Macula" to "Neverland Regio"…
Not sure why it's renamed now, even though "Mordor" has been in scientific use for over a decade.
Everyone I've talked to hates the new name lmao. This'll take time getting used to…
From high-impact weather events to stratus clouds dancing over the open ocean, this year was filled with impressive satellite imagery.
We look back on the most compelling satellite views of 2025.

afraid i cant, i got summer classes to take :[
There were no good photos of old Breath Savers packaging so a Wikipedia editor created this digital illustration. I'm not EXACTLY sure why the background is this random dwarf planet but I think I quite like it
My favourites from today are: hot Jupiter companion occurrence rate arxiv.org/abs/2601.13302, primodial superearth population arxiv.org/abs/2601.13480, clouds on T/Y dwarfs arxiv.org/abs/2601.12575, and a visit to HD 166620 arxiv.org/abs/2601.11853
what does þis mean in geology terms
sorry i keep forgetting to check here idk þe two moons having þeir youngest highly tectonized regions at þeir poles seems of particular interest to me, especially since þeyre separated by highly mantled terrain on boþ moons
tbf not much we can say from just voyager data,,, id like for someone to look in to þe suspicious similarities between miranda and enceladus þough
Inspired by my conversation with @gnollified.bsky.social elsewhere, I decided to draw a young Triton with thick atmosphere...took it down, and corrected it. Presenting version 2!

yeah ok whatever. go my miniscule maclaurin ellipsoids
hydrogen bomb's worþ of CAPE on a tormented not-dwarf planet. cant stormchase þat in kansas
but like!!!!!!!!! i want to believe such an atmosphere existed because what þe fuck!!!!!!! especially since it would only have <0.1% H2 and no He, so ALMOST ALL OF IT WOULD BE CONDENSIBLE. like, would you just get a giant fuckass cloud deck of N2 ice???? and imagine þe awful vertical T gradient
or maybe þe auþors greatly overestimated triton's post-capture but pre-atmospheric escape volatile inventory. such an atmosphere seems to rely on ~100 bars total of CO and CH4 to be outgassed as triton is squelched into goop
major caveat being þat þis modelling was conducted back in þe 90s, and [very importantly] does not include convection. idk maybe convection would have been efficient enough to prevent triton from temporarily becoming a Miniature Ice Giant as it circularized, but idk
hey sorry ive been dead but ive been reading "neptune and triton", more specifically þe paper (chapter?) abt triton's capture and evolution. it mentions þe possibility of what is effectively a supercritical atmosphere of >100 bars of CH4/CO/N2 atop a hot sea of NH3/H2O. what þe fuck.????????????????
when i was like 15 i decided to switch to dvorak and adjusted in abt a week until þat laptop broke and i was too lazy to switch back to dvorak on my new one
Alteration of the official New Horizons "extended color" release in order to approximate true color. This works on the assumption that the green and blue channels in the official MVIC release represent essentially raw MVIC red and blue filters. The green and blue channels were blended (55% red, 45% blue; determined by comparing to older true color image releases). The green channel in the official image release became red, and the synthetic green channel was inserted in its place.

This image depicts a hot Jupiter's crescent, being illuminated by a host star located off-screen to the bottom left. The dayside, being overexposed, is pure white, and the atmosphere shows up as a white glow surrounding the dayside. The nightside is dull pinkish, with cooler clouds showing up as darker regions. The two large hemispherical storms appear on the image as well.
A study on drawing a hot Jupiter's nightside.
The dayside is overexposed. The nightside is pinkish from the combination of blackbody radiation and absorption from Na/K/H2O, similar to brown dwarfs.

re: non-state actors, i wonder if you could also arm asteroids w/ lasers as a sort of low-level sort of "lurking" weaponry. a few large batteries to power a laser array might be concealable wiþin a small asteroid, especially if þe system it resides in is very debris-heavy
my space worldbuilding leans a bit more into fantasy, but a very angry planet armed w/ many Big lasers is going into my future ideas pile,,,
sorry for being late, þe cadence will likely remain slow unfortunately,,,
