But one of them kept* a closer, more critical, and more experienced eye on whateve clique dominates the House of Commons, in view of how unrepresentative that is.
* Less so since 1999, and, likely, hardly at all now.
A cartoon by Ron Cobb (1975), showing a shadow of US B-52 bomber above cratered landscape. Two people who look like Vietnamese peasants look up; one says βtheyβre having problems with their economy again.β

Many. A simple, cost-free and precedented one would be to remove all party references from ballot papers. Another would be to enforce existing law on interfering with MP's work, but on party "whipping": all votes in Parliament should be "free". Obviously, there are more dramatic solutions.
The (historic and current) parties are institutionally corrupt. PR, although, theoretically, more representative, hands absolute power to the party elites.

Antything to ignore the most unrepresentative, ineffective and corrupt elephant in the room: the House of Commons.
The House of Lords was effective, was less dominated by the London political party"whips" and was, for some time, more representative of the population, and particularly it's views than the ineffective, unrepresentative Commons. It is now, mostly, composed of hangers-on of the party elites.
