"Unless we stop burning oil, coal, and gas, then the constraints on livability caused by extreme heat will only become more common and widespread, particularly as the global population ages"

We now have a pattern of siskin visits. In autumn a big flock passes through, who don't seem to know about bird feeders, and only stay a day or two. Over winter there's occasional feeder visits from a few, then we get a group in spring for a few days. In summer we get the odd visit from a pair.

Today at 16:30 GMT, I'll be on BBC Radio 4, Inside Science with @amsterdammed.bsky.social.

We'll be finding out why PFAS pollution is depriving London of 20million litres of drinking water a day, & what the EA is doing about it.

I may have told you about a relative who, in the twilight, attempted conversation with what he took to be a surly, grunting, local, who turned out to be a bear.

I was once in the Forest of Dean uncomfortably close to a group of boar who did not appear to be aware of me - I could hear and smell them so wind in wrong direction. Never, even in the face of temperamental bullocks, have I made such a cautious retreat!

Re today's BBC Radio 4 In Our Time on Archaea and the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes: you go to the chip shop, or get a Deliveroo.

Quite widely used, for whatever purpose. I seem to remember a reference in the Mahabharata. I assumed that the wider head simply improved the chance of a hit on smaller quarry.

There is hope. Look what sanity prevailed in the 1945 general election. Even when we were financially broke. Policies we actually wanted. Public services run for the public. Truly affordable, decent housing built by government for us. Free higher education...

But one of them kept* a closer, more critical, and more experienced eye on whateve clique dominates the House of Commons, in view of how unrepresentative that is.
* Less so since 1999, and, likely, hardly at all now.

Many. A simple, cost-free and precedented one would be to remove all party references from ballot papers. Another would be to enforce existing law on interfering with MP's work, but on party "whipping": all votes in Parliament should be "free". Obviously, there are more dramatic solutions.

The (historic and current) parties are institutionally corrupt. PR, although, theoretically, more representative, hands absolute power to the party elites.

Bloody hell. Modern British houses are such dogshit.

Staring at a property which has windows so small that it looks like someone has made 6 holes in a sheet of A1 paper with a pencil.
