At least a dozen little egrets in with the cattle in the cow field on Murton Lane Mumbles.. still waiting for one of them to turn into a cattle egret.. #birdingwales @gowerbirds.bsky.social
Rob, Ceris and Will stand on the Helen Clare. It is loaded with boxes. The marina is visible in the background.
Five go to an island!
We've now been back on the island for nearly two weeks. Check out our latest blog post by Skomer Fieldworker Will about the arrival.

Just watched a lady on Aberafan Beach walking what I originally thought were 3 Shetland ponys.. on scoping them they turned out to be Bernese or probably St Bernards.. absolutely huge.. One dog food bill I wouldn't want!
Singing Greenfinch from Castell du last week.

31 moths of 10 species for my first @gardenmothscheme.bsky.social survey of 2026. Just Early Grey new for the year, plus the cranefly Tipula rufina. #teammoth
Wow I've nearly got to 200 followers.. I must admit I thought there would be more take-up on here compared to Twitter (where I was in the '000's.
Some nice birds locally and out around Pembs over the last week or so as spring slowly starts going. On the local patch, a Marsh Harrier east over Skrinkle and a Goshawk over Manorbier in the week. Yesterday 2 Velvet Scoter off Telpyn Pt and today a Black Redstart at Martin's Haven! #birdingWales
Best place in Gower
Marsh Tit
Next up was Mill Wood which was full of calling Redwing, Fieldfare, Mistle and Song Thrush, plus our quarry the Marsh Tit. Eventually found a single bird just off the main path. Terrible photo but always a nice bird to spot. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birdsSeenIn2026 #birds @gowerbirds.bsky.social
Any displays from goshawks
Trying to work out if it's the black blob on the floor or the black fuzzy dot halfway up the wall.. 🙄😁
It was so gloomy/foggy/drizzly out today that birding/photography were tricky/difficult but I did manage to spot 1 of the female Black redstarts at Penarth Marina (not seen by me for a couple of weeks) & all 3 of the overwintering Common sandpipers were along the Ely embankment. #birdingWales
Hooded Crow and Carrion Crow
Took a bit of searching, not helped by the thick fog, but I eventually caught up with the Hooded Crow at South Gower RFC today. It was fairly mobile and quite wary but gave decent views in the end. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birdsSeenIn2026 #birds @gowerbirds.bsky.social @birdsinwales.bsky.social

A very poor quality snippet of video of the two Red-necked Grebes yesterday, but at least a record of them. Great find, Julian 👍.

A good read - our Swansea area Reserves Manager Paul Thornton's update on work going on at the area's newest nature reserve - Cartersford on Gower.
Fantastic job from the conservation volunteers! 💚💪

I've sent you a couple of direct messages but they've not been read .
A 1st winter Mediterranean Gull stood on a stone surrounded by grass, sporting a red ring on its right leg with the code PMEN.
Mediterranean Gull is my favourite gull, and I love nothing more than reading a colour ring. So this beauty in Neyland, Pembrokeshire, today was particularly enjoyed. It's from Poland. #BirdingWales
The Newborough pines Hooded Crow was busy on the upper shingle between C2 buoy and Ynys Llandywyn this afternoon. Perhaps a hybrid? ... seems to be a rather mottled bird.

Don't think there is an issue with authentication.. @richarddann.bsky.social seems to have disappeared.. not answering at all..
@stephen8vickers.bsky.social hi Stephen.. I posted a jackdaw sighting last week and got the history back on the app as normal.. but there was a sighting I made of the same bird sometime late January or early Feb not showing.. not sure if that was a glitch or an issue @richarddann.bsky.social
Great Grey Shrike
A speculative trip to the Cambrian Mountains north of Llyn Brianne reservoir this morning came up trumps with the Great Grey Shrike at our first stop! Great views from the road inc in flight and hovering. A long overdue Welsh tick. #birdingWales #rareBirdsUK #UKWildlife @birdsinwales.bsky.social
Looks like jackdaw being photo bombed by a ring ousel..! 🤪🤪😁😁
A profile view of a Scaup floating on calm, rippled water. The duck features a dark, chocolate-brown head and neck, a striking yellow eye, and a broad, pale blue-grey bill with a small black tip. Its body shows a mix of mottled brown and grey feathers.

A side-profile, action shot captures a Greater Scaup (a type of diving duck) in mid-flight just above the surface of a rippling body of water.

A few shots of the scaup at cosmeston today. Flew off for a quick circuit and landed back in the same place near the big bird table. Other birds 2 fieldfare, chiffchaff among the usuals. #birds🪶
