What's happening in Chicago is not normal.
The arrest of Alderperson Fuentes is just the latest example of how far Noem and Bovino are willing to go to ignore the rule of law. We must all speak up.

The oyster farmer Graham Platner is angling to unseat Susan Collins. He’s been endorsed by Bernie Sanders, and a recent internal poll has Platner ahead of Collins by 12 points. Can he make the leap from harbormaster to senator?

How on earth can this country still hold the World Cup and Olympics next year??
"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."
As a mother? I don’t want to hear a word about Mother’s Day when this is what we’re doing to mothers in this country.
No lies detected. This is our country now.
This is mislabeled. Actually, it’s a map of where scientific discoveries, biomedical research, cancer treatments, and drug discovery come from. Also economic growth.
Hey Marco
Why, no, you shouldn't have to have your 'papers' on yourself at all times or face extraordinary rendition to a foreign country, actually
Fun fact: the International Criminal Court at The Hague does NOT recognize any immunity based on official title or diplomatic status.
forever re-learning that the poem comes out of what I don't yet know. I don't have to know or plan what's going to happen when I go to the page, and it's usually better if I don't. the point is to sit down and let it happen.
"ICE took our students, we want them back," @aaup professors from NYU/Columbia among other universities chant, marching to Foley Square.

President Trump is using the Abrego Garcia case to establish a truly chilling proposition: that no one can stop him from imprisoning anyone he wants anywhere else in the world never to be seen or heard from again. His dream is to preside over a police state. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/o...
Somehow, the future is both going to be a dystopian techno sci-fi hellscape AND we're gonna have coal and measles and robber barons and a permanent underclass.

BIG UPDATE TODAY: This afternoon, the ACLU filed a new "class action habeas" lawsuit in New York challenging the Alien Enemies Act removals. They are seeking a temporary restraining order which would basically replicate the same thing they previously had with Judge Boasberg's order.
"University leaders should commit, collectively and immediately, to challenge unlawful demands that threaten academic freedom and university self-governance": read my brilliant colleague Dave Pozen @ryandoerfler.bsky.social and Sam Bagenstos in @thenation.com here: www.thenation.com/article/soci...
MEMORANDUM OPINION In 2019, an immigration judge acting under the authority delegated by the United States Attorney General and pursuant to powers vested by Congress- granted Plaintiff Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia ("Abrego Garcia") withholding of removal, thereby protecting him from return to his native country, El Salvador. ECF No. 1 9 41; EC No. 1-1. Such protection bars the United States from sending a noncitizen to a country where, more likely than not, he would face persecution that risks his "life or freedom." See Immigration and Nationality Act ("INA"), 8 U.S.C. § 1231(b)(3)(A); see also 8 C.F.R. §$ 208.16-.18 & 24 (setting forth the standard for withholding of removal and the procedures required for its termination). Six years later, without notice, legal justification, or due process, officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("ICE"), a subagency of the Department of Homeland Security ("DHS"), put him on a plane bound for the Terrorism Confinement Center ("CECOT")
NEW: As the Fourth Circuit today considers whether to block her order, Judge Paula Xinis releases a strong opinion defending it, calling Kilmar Abrego Garcia's detention "wholly lawless" and her order "the narrowest, daresay only, relief warranted." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Oh HELL YEAH
Looking down on a crowd from a small hill. Onto the Vermont State House lawn. Lots of umbrellas and colorful raincoats. Hard to read any signs but there is one in support of sovereign Canada. The whole lawn is full, a few thousand people. It’s grey and the trees are still bare. Across the street is a 5 story cream colored early 20th century office building. More interesting Victorian-ish buildings to the sides. Behind are low, tree covered hills.
Montpelier, VT #HandsOff
It was 40° F and raining. This is a pretty impressive crowd for Vermont.
To the world:
We are fighting back. Our movement has been silenced by the media here—but we are not backing down. This is what our streets looked like across multiple cities. Tomorrow, there will be more of us! Raise a glass to freedom.

I scanned dozens of newspapers from around the U.S. & world. On average, international newspapers cover the widespread protests against Trump/Musk and for democracy much more prominently on their covers than those in the U.S.
This isn’t due to deadlines, protests were daytime in the U.S. #handsoff
