Thanks!
We watch too much American Western film, maybe. But the reference is to magicians' hats- and therefore tricks... ;-)
A good discussion ahead!
I will be discussing at the @lawinmaastricht.bsky.social @martinicogi.bsky.social 's recent work on 'Populism, the principle of primacy and the values of the EU'. Seminar jointly organised by @um-foundations.bsky.social and @glnmaastricht.bsky.social on 23.10.2025. Join if you can (also on line)!
βThey have plundered the world, stripping naked the land in their hungerβ¦(...) They ravage, they slaughter, they seize by false pretenses, and all of this they hail as the construction of empire. And when in their wake nothing remains but a desert, they call that peace.β (Tacitus, Agricola)
Happening tomorrow, in Maastricht and on line #JurisprudenSky
Does this need any comment?
My pleasure
What a few days we've had at the University of Maastricht for the RECONNET Conference in Constitutional Theory. Thanks in particular to @massimofichera.bsky.social.
The first panel has Cormac Mac Amhlaigh talking on the harm of populism, particularly to pluralism, Donald Bello Hutt asking what the role of citizens is in ensuring the rule of law, and @tomhickeydcu.bsky.social on how the Irish constitution exemplifies constitutions as a legitimacy pact
Starting with Carmen Pavelβs keynote on postnational constitutionalism and the (dis)advantages of codification in that context. Great discussion right off the bat - what do we want to constitutionalise, why, and how, what role for courts and communities, &c
In the 3rd session of the day, Victoria Kristan develops a framework for restoring the rule of law after illiberal rule of law violations, and @jscholt.bsky.social gives us a mental map of European constitutionalism
In the 2nd session, @ruthhoughton.bsky.social reflects on the relationship between constituent power and utopia, @massimofichera.bsky.social connects legitimate authority to communal constitutionalism, & Francesco Rizzi Brignoli discusses constitutional identity and future generations
Massimo, Donald and Francesco kicking off the conference with words of welcome in the Feestzaal of Maastrichtβs Faculty of Law
Today and tomorrow, @lawinmaastricht.bsky.social and @um-foundations.bsky.social are hosting the #RECONNET conference on Constitutionalism and Democracy: Tensions and Transformations, organised by @massimofichera.bsky.social, Donald Bello Hutt and Francesco Rizzi Brignoli
Catchy title, no doubt
