Scrapbook style image with graph paper and a magnifying glass. A text overlay reads, "Sarah P. Mather (1796β1868) patented a submarine telescope with an internal lamp that allowed shipbuilders, naval crews, and inspectors to see below the waterline without dryβdocking. Her invention enhanced safety, maintenance, and threat detection for commercial vessels and Civil War naval operations.
Hereβs the role we would offerβ¦ if we werenβt 180 years too late."
She didnβt just design a new tool. She solved a problem no one else had.
Womenβs History Month reminds us how many innovators never got the chances they deserved.

An open notebook with sketches and images of eclipses, plant leaves, and scientific diagrams. Text on the left page reads, "When we give opportunity," and on the right page, "we gain entire fields of innovation." Below the notebook, the message reads, "See the dream team we'd hire if these brilliant innovators were here today. Women's History Month 2026." The image is branded with the Thorlabs logo at the top.
Womenβs brilliance was never the limiting factor. π‘
For Womenβs History Month, weβre imagining the dream team weβd hire if we could recruit women whose discoveries shaped photonics before they were allowed in labs.
All month, weβll post scientific pioneers and the modern roles theyβd excel in today.
