Here we go again - UK in a changing Europe Anand Menon argues that while the UK government speaks more freely about the economic impact of Brexit and its ambitions for closer ties to the EU, its red lines will limit what it is able to achieve.

Talking about the economic impact of Brexit is one thing. Doing something about is something else entirely. Me for @ukandeu.bsky.social ukandeu.ac.uk/here-we-go-a...

Turns out that if you spend most of the allotted time rhetorically grandstanding under the guise of asking a question, you run out of time to hear any answers.

The impact of Brexit on immigration to the UK A new analysis finds that Brexit raised the number of foreign-born workers in the UK by about 200,000, but resulted in a more dramatic shift in the countries of origin.

New research by me @jdportes.bsky.social: we find that the end of free movement and the new immigration regime rather modestly raised the number of foreign-born workers in Britain – by about 200,000 in 2024. Thread. www.cer.eu/insights/imp...

In contrast to Labour's accusations of a Conservative "open borders experiment", @jdportes.bsky.social & @johnspringford.bsky.social find that #Brexit and the new immigration regime raised the number of foreign-born workers in the UK by a modest 200,000.

The impact of Brexit on foreign-born workers in the UK How did Brexit impact the UK labour market? This column uses synthetic differences-in-differences to estimate how Brexit changed the trajectory of foreign-born employment. The authors find that ending free movement and introducing a new immigration system in 2021 led to a modest rise in the number of foreign-born workers in the UK, but a dramatic shift in their countries of origin.

I’ve spent years, decades, obsessing over the Bush Administration’s Iraq WMD lies, writing about them, debunking them.

I can think of no lie about Iraq WMDs told by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al that comes even close to the enormity and absurdity of this lie from Donald Trump.
